In all likelihood someone has turned him against you, but this will certainly pass. I very much wish that you'll be reconciled, i.e. that the misunderstanding will be cleared up, but I don't in the least regret that he's ceased his proofreading. He's not at all suited to it, because he doesn't like it, — perhaps it's against his ~~disorganized~~ nature to do something that ~~require~~ such precision, haste and attentiveness. Симфонию получил и очень скоро верну тебе её назад. Сегодня я буду проигрывать её с племянницей. ''3 Morceaux'' для скрипки получил уже давно и весьма восхищался издание. Манускрипт цел, и я тебе его вытребую, но признаюсь, что тут не ''без'' трудностей. Особа, у которой она находится, далеко не из тех, что будет им жопу подтирать, — напротив.

Внимая твоим жалобам на гравёров и на их пьянство и безобразие, я трепещу от конфуза, ибо в не особенно отдалённом будущем на тебя свалится новое бедствие в виде весьма объёмистой 4-хактной оперы моего сочинения.

Сегодня высылаю, наконец, транскрипцию ''Мессера''. Она весьма годится к печати, хотя кое-что мне в ней не особенно нравится, а главное — я сомневаюсь, чтоб она составляла благодарный скрипичный ''morceau''. Впрочем черт его знает?

Что делается у тебя с Кашкиным? Отчего вы разошлись не мирно? Мне немножко грустно усматривать между Вами недоразумение. По всей вероятности, кто-нибудь его настроил враждебно против тебя, но, конечно, это пройдёт. Очень желаю, чтоб Вы помирились, т. е. разъяснилось бы недоразумение, но нимало не сожалею, что он оставил своё корректорство. Он совсем не годится не потому, что не хочет, — а потому, что с его ли безалаберной натурой заниматься таким делом, где требуется точность, спешность и внимательность.

Поверенный А[нтонины] И[вановны] был у Анатолия. Он так же глуп, как и она, и едва ли что из этого выйдет — но Анатолий объявил им, что раньше осени я дело не начну. Она просит чрез этого господина, чтобы в течение четырёх месяцев я ей давал по 100 р[ублей] с[еребром]. Дудки! Я намерен отказать или, лучше, ничего не отвечать. Жаль, что я потерял её письмо к Анатолию: — это верх совершенства и превосходит все доселе вышедшее из-под пера этой новейшей ''Georges Sand''. По поводу чего ты говоришь о лжи?
