Since my arrival here, there's been an endless spell of fine weather, and there hasn't been a single day when I couldn't walk and enjoy myself. This year's beetroot will probably be horrid. Some areas were eaten by grey beetles and had to be reseeded, and these reseeded parts were afflicted by them again. In places where the beetles didn't eradicate them, where they grew magnificently, a caterpillar has now appeared which is much more terrible and dangerous than the beetles; it's caused terrible devastation in Yurchikha. Жары стоят очень сильные. Само собой разумеется, что вследствие этого я плохо сплю. Окно отворено у меня всю ночь, но моя спальня имеет свойство сохранять всегда свой собственный душный воздух. Соседство прачечной, к сожалению, даёт себя чувствовать.

Интересных новостей никаких сообщить не имею, за исключением лишь приезда Жени Бирюковой, случившегося вчера. Саша, слава Богу, все эти дни имеет очень весёлый и счастливый вид и чувствует себя очень хорошо. Французская гувернантка перестала казаться мне подозрительной. Она просто очень милая старая дева. Если бы ты знал, до чего сделалась забавна Персефона! Она помешалась на французском языке и целый день жарит невероятные фразы. Трудно удержаться от хохоту, смотря на неё, особенно когда она говорит колкости Нат[алье] Андр[еевне], которую терпеть не может.

Я ещё колеблюсь: ехать к Кондратьеву или нет. И хочется, и не хочется, а главное, денег совсем нет, а занимать у Левы мне страх как совестно. Кроме того, меня удерживает страх жары на жел[езной] дороге и ещё нежелание терять время и отрываться от своей милой партитуры. Вероятно, я никуда не тронусь, и ты найдёшь меня здесь, когда приедешь.

В лес ездили два раза. Как хорошо было в ''Зрубанце'' третьего дня! Вообще по чудной погоде это лето превосходит все, какия я запомню. С самого моего приезда сюда продолжается нескончаемое вёдро, и не было ни одного дня, в который нельзя было бы гулять и наслаждаться. Бураки в нынешнем году, вероятно, будут отвратительны. Иные участки съели серые жуки, пришлось пересевать, и этот пересев снова от них пострадал. Там же, где жуки их не истребили и где они росли великолепно, — теперь появился червь, который гораздо страшнее и опаснее жуков, и в Юрчихе он производит страшнейшие опустошения.

Саша поручила мне просить тебя узнать, получила ли ''Ольга Серг[еевна]'' два письма её, на которые она не имеет никакого ответа.

Ты придёшь в восторг от ''Юрия''. Он так ориг[ин]ален, что нет возможности письменно изобразить его прелести. Но моим фаворитом всё-таки есть и всегда останется чудный, несравненный ''Бобик''.

До свиданья, Толяша мой милый. Жду с нетерпением твоего приезда.
