	As I write to you, the most tedious, miserable rain is falling, threatening to pour down all day, because it has for three hours now continuously, and the sky gives not the slightest hope of it clearing up. This puts me in a foul mood, and I feel inexpressibly fed up and miserable, thinking about [[Kamenka]] and all of you. I travelled very safely and slept magnificently. Arriving in [[Kiev]], I was so unpleasantly struck by the filthy station that I decided to go to straight to the hotel. After drinking tea, I went for a stroll and wander around Khreshchatyk, and also bought some essentials. How horrid a city is in the summer — even [[Kiev]]! There are stinking fumes in the air, and the smell of ''pee-pee'' (pardon!) reigns everywhere. The greenery and flowers in the Tsar's garden seemed so pitiful to me, dusty, withered, and defiled by cigarette ends and all sorts of human filth. Soon it started to rain, and I went to have lunch, being very careful in what I ate, because my stomach was acting up; the least little thing would result in a small spasm. After that, drowsiness overcame me and I slept for a couple of hours, and in fairness I have to say that it was very good. I was woken by screams under the window (I was ~~saying~~ in the "European", downstairs). It turned out that a drunk man was beating a drunk woman. Then I sat, fed up, until the idea came to me to ease my soul with a short letter. I want so much to be able to kiss you all tenderly at this moment. I must honestly say that I think I've never been so calm and happy as during these 2½ months with you in [[Kamenka]]. В то время как я тебе пишу, идёт наискучнейший, тоскливейший дождь, грозящий лить целый день, ибо уже три часа сряду он идёт и на небе нет ни малейшей надежды, чтоб разъяснилось. От этого расположение духа скверное, и я невыразимо, скучаю и грущу, думая о Каменке и о Вас всех. Ехал я очень благополучно и спал великолепно. Приехавши в Киев, я был так неприятно поражён грязью вокзала, что решился всё-таки поехать в гостиницу. Напившись чаю, пошёл погулять и пошляться по Крещатику, а также купить кое-какие необходимые вещи. Как противен город летом, даже Киев! В воздухе носятся вонючие испарения, и надо всеми ими царит запах ''пипи'' (pardon!). В Царском саду зелень и цветы показались мне такими жалкими, пыльными, чахлыми и опоганенными окурками и всякой другой человеческой пакостью. Вскоре пошёл дождь и я отправился завтракать, причём был очень осторожен в пище, ибо желудок пошаливает: нет-нет да и схватит его маленькая спазмочка. После того на меня напала сонливость, и я часика два поспал, и справедливость требует сказать, что очень хорошо. Был разбужен криками под окном (я остановился в «Европейской», внизу). Оказалось, что пьяный мужик бил пьяную бабу. Затем сидел и скучал, пока не явилась мысль отвести душу самым маленьким письмецом. Так бы мне хотелось Вас всех в эту минуту нежно перецеловать! Нужно правду сказать, что никогда я, кажется, так не был покоен и счастлив, как эти 2½ месяца у Вас в Каменке.

Ежеминутно переношусь мысленно к Вам. Целую крепко всех, начиная с тебя и кончая Укой. Не хочу затруднять тебя просьбой ответить, но очень прошу Таню, Верушу, Анну и Нату (которую тоже целую вместе с Мимишкой) написать мне. Попроси Леву пересылать мне все письма, которые придут вплоть до будущей среды.
