He must have recognised that the matter was taking a serious turn, and asked, amongst other things, for a nurse to be found for him, or for him to be sent from here to a farm near ''Sumy'' where some healer lives, who is creating a great sensation here with her successful treatments. In general he feels that he will be confined to bed for a long while, and is starting to be ''afraid''.		''Treatment'' is the following. Милая моя Сaня! Пишу тебе под самым грустным впечатлением. Уезжая, я забыл опросить твоё средство от водяной! Между тем я нашёл бедного моего старичка в положении ''отчаянном'', — по крайней мере, на мой взгляд. Опишу тебе подробно все, что он из себя теперь представляет.

''Внешность''. Худоба совершенно невообразимая и до того страшная, что, смотря на него, я должен брать на себя, чтоб не отвёртываться от ужаса и жалости. Лежит в халате на боку, причём на постель вываливается громадный живот. Говорит с трудом, при этом слышится в груди какой-то посторонний звук, но впрочем не бульбулькание воды, а какая-то сипота, как при астме.

''Ощущение его''. Он чувствует себя невероятно слабым. ''Аппетита никакого''. Спит ''отлично'' и целый день находится в полу дремоте. Духом не падает и, напротив, старается уверить себя и всех, что ничего нет, что все пройдёт, только бы можно было, по его выражению, ''tirér canon'' (он воображает, что у него в животе ''газы''). Нервы сильно расстроенные, и при всяком случае плачет. Иногда бывает лихорадочный озноб.

''Признаки болезни''. Когда тронет живот, слышно переливание воды. ''Урины'' выходит очень мало, приблизительно с одну треть горшка в день. Испражнения жидкие и по большей части непроизвольные, т. е. приходится раза два в день менять белье, по крайней мере так было вчера. По временам жалуется на удушье. Впрочем вообще страдает мало; лишь изредка у него бывают колики.

''Лечени'' е его следующее. Доктор, посещающий его приблизительно два раза в неделю, дал ему микстуру, в которой заключается ''арника с spiritum nitri''. Принимается она три раза в день по столовой ложке. Советовал он пить молоко стакана два в день. Кроме того, два раза в день он принимает по 5 гранов хинины. Сегодня я нашёл вместе с Кондратьевым, что старик хуже, чем вчера. На наши вопросы он, по обыкновению, отвечал, что все вздор, что ничего особенного нет, — но слаб до того, что говоря, беспрестанно останавливается и путается. Должно быть, сознает, что дело принимает серьёзный оборот, и просил между прочим приискать ему сиделку или же отправить его отсюда на хутор близ ''Сум'', где живёт какая-то знахарка, производящая здесь своими удачными лечениями большую сенсацию. Вообще чувствует, что придётся долго лежать, и начинает ''бояться''.

Я возлагаю большие надежды на тебя и на твоё лечение. Напиши, матушка, ''подробно'', что делать. Признаться, к здешним докторам я не питаю ни малейшего доверия. Правда ли, что выпускать воду нельзя? Ведь это бы сразу его облегчило? Смертельная ли это болезнь? Есть ли это последствие оспы? Ради Бога, прости, что беспокою тебя. Если тебе самой некогда написать, поручи ''Тане''.
