	I'm feeling out of sorts today, and for no good reason. I was rather fed up with the noise of the city; I wanted to go somewhere out of town; we went after lunch, and what happened! The noise, the roar of carriages and carts, the ''beggars'' (this plague of [[Rome]]) was even greater than in the city. Meanwhile the weather is so divine that one is drawn to go somewhere in the country. Secretly in my soul today I longed for [[Kamenka]], for [[Clarens]], and for silence and solitude in general. For example, two days ago we did a walk that simply delighted me; namely, we first went to the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, then to another church (San-Pietro in Vincoli), which has ~~Michaelangelo~~'s famous statue of "Moses", and from there to the Coliseum; we climbed to the very top and watched the amazing sunset. Yesterday, I went to the Capitol, and inspected all the statues of the emperors in detail; this was remarkably interesting to me, since I'm reading ''Ampère''{{'}}s excellent book "''L'Empire Romain à Rome''", which sets out in detail the extremely lively and interesting characteristics of the emperors.		But I can have no complaints about [[Rome]]. For example, two days ago we did a walk that simply delighted me; namely, we first went to the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, then to another church (San-Pietro in Vincoli), which has Michelangelo's famous statue of "Moses", and from there to the Coliseum; we climbed to the very top and watched the amazing sunset. Yesterday, I went to the Capitol and inspected all the statues of the emperors in detail; this was remarkably interesting to me, since I'm reading ''Ampère''{{'}}s excellent book "''L'Empire Romain à Rome''", which sets out in detail the extremely lively and interesting characteristics of the emperors.

	Tomorrow we shall have a Christmas tree. This should have been very cheerful and pleasant, had it not, due to [[Modya]]'s imprudence, been necessary to invite Masalitinov, and as a result of this — Golitsyn, and as a result of this — the painter ''Djulio'' who lives with them, and as a result of this — a young man ''Amici'', who accompanies him on the mandolin. Thus, a whole throng has been assembled, the very thought of which makes me shudder. Each of us four will be giving gifts to the other three, not excluding [[Nikolay Konradi\|Kolya]] or [[Alyosha]]. These gifts are kept secret from one another, and you can just imagine our frequent mysterious appearances and disappearances from each other.
