Карлуша! Не знаю почему, но мне всё кажется, что ты немножко на меня сердишься. Прав я или нет? Если да, то знаю, за что: за то, что до сих пор не написал тебе хоров. Но ведь я же говорил тебе, что готов с ''величайшим наслаждением'' написать тебе несколько хоров, если ты только пришлёшь мне слова. Потрудись с чьей-нибудь помощью выбрать несколько подходящих текстов, и я примусь за работу.

Что ты поделываешь? Как расположение духа? Как живут твои домашние? Все Вы мне навсегда дороги, милы и близки, и ''никогда'' я не изменюсь в моей дружбе к тебе и ко всем тем, кто тебе друг.

Про себя скажу тебе, что здоров, что понемножку пописываю, что не скучаю, но и не особенно наслаждаюсь, так как Рим оказался не в моём вкусе: здесь больно шумно, суетно, пёстро! Живу же я здесь ради Модеста, который приехал для здоровья своего воспитанника, с коим ему одному трудно справиться. Ещё решительно не знаю, сколько останусь в Риме. Если тебе вздумается мне ответить или послать тексты для хоров, то, пожалуйста, прежде справься у Петра Ивановича о моём адресе, ибо он всегда у него будет. Очень может случиться, что я отсюда уеду, но об этом предварительно уведомлю Юргенсона.

Как часто я вспоминал Москву и тебя в последнее время! Ведь много лет сряду накануне Рождества и накануне Нового Года я всегда бывал твоим гостем. Помнишь знаменитую ''жжёнку'', которую мы с тобой смастерили в 1875 г. и после которой я, кажется, целую неделю был пьян?

По поводу этого скажу тебе, что ''память''—одно из самых благодатных даров неба. Для меня нет высшего наслаждения, как погружаться в прошедшее. Воспоминание, как луч лунного света, имеет свойство озарять прошедшее как раз настолько, что всё худое не замечается, а всё хорошее кажется ещё лучшим.
