С Бесселем я и не ссорился и не мирился. Я предложил ему переделанную 2-ю симфонию за ''200'' р[ублей]. Он согласия. Контракт будет заключён в том смысле, как я тебе писал из Рима, но он просил только отсрочки обязательства напечатать голоса к октябрю и удалить его до 1-го января; на это я согласился. Половину 200 р[ублей] я у него взял, остальную получу при подписании контракта. Я совершенно не понимаю, что ты говоришь, спрашивая меня, намерен ли я отдать ему ''исключительное право на мои сочинения''? Этот вопрос понятен только относительно «''Ромео''». Не могу же я отнимать от него ''романсы'', которые я ему продал? Или «''Опричника''», которого я когда-то подарил? Из того, что Бессель явный плут и мошенник, то не следует, что и я должен быть недобросовестным?

Что касается «''Ромео''», то мне очень жаль, что придётся подписывать контракт прежде, нежели с тобой увижусь. Мне хотелось бы все это разъяснить. ''Во всяком случае, когда зайдёт разговор об этой увертюре, я ему скажу, что Бок мне рассказал про его мошеннический поступок, и никоим образом не соглашусь дать ему право собственности для России, если он не согласится заплатить мне хороший куш''. Я уже недели две не видел Бесселя. Но перед отъездом буду у него. Скажу лишь одно: ''чем окончательнее я разделаюсь с этой гадиной, тем лучше''. Он мне до того стал противен, что я делаюсь просто болен, когда вижу его подлую улыбку и слушаю этот омерзительный высокий тенорок.
