It made me feel very sad. It is clear to me that you have again fallen <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">in to </del>despondency and despair. I put this down to the proximity of the decisive outcome, and understand that the abrupt upheaval in your life must be the cause of great moral anguish. But I assure you, Alina Ivanovna, that all the adverse consequences of your break from Herman Karlovich appear to you at this moment in a most exaggerated form. For example, you write that besides me, you find no-one at Kamenka has taken you to their hearts. This is a completely erroneous assumption! Everyone who is aware of your domestic circumstances sympathizes with you wholeheartedly, and wishes you peace and solace as soon as possible. As for Modest, you can indeed rest assured that there is no-one who feels more sympathetic, and wishes you more happiness. He still hasn't said anything to Kolya yet, since Herman Karlovich asked him to delay this until Grankino. In the meantime Modest is gradually preparing him for the difficult moment. Kolya knows only that you and Vera won't be at Grankino, and each time it's discussed he is full of tears. The forthcoming upheaval won't be easy for him, but I hope that little by little he will be prepared, and ultimately he will become reconciled to everything. Modest has never thought for a moment that he would have to blame and slander you in Kolya's eyes; he merely considered it would be impossible to go on without telling Kolya that you had left home!! . At the present moment he certainly doesn't know how Kolya will be informed of the news. But his only concern is how to preserve in Kolya's soul that pure filial affection he has for you, and you can be sure that it will be so.

I received your letter today.

I received your letter today. It made me feel very sad. It is clear to me that you have again fallen in to despondency and despair. I put this down to the proximity of the decisive outcome, and understand that the abrupt upheaval in your life must be the cause of great moral anguish. At the present moment he certainly doesn't know how Kolya will be informed of the news. But his only concern is how to preserve in Kolya's soul that pure filial affection he has for you, and you can be sure that it will be so.

Kolya, praise God, is healthy, cheerful and even sweeter than ever. Modest will be writing to you.

Please, Alina Ivanovna, brace yourself with courage and bear this difficult moment with a philosophical calm. Know that not a single decent person will ever blame you for anything, and they will always understand you are a victim of fateful circumstances independent of your will. Believe me that everything will end up completely for the better.
