Посылаю тебе бумагу из Цензурного ведомства, присланную мне режиссёром Кондратьевым вместе с пропущенным цензурою либретто. Ты увидишь, какие странные изменения от меня потребовали: пришлось, однако ж, подчиниться. Я сделал незначительные кое-где изменения в словах, а в финальной сцене пришлось сделать сокращение.<br />

Ты, кажется, собираешься ехать в Петербург. Не будешь ли ты так добр похлопотать в Главном управлении печати, чтобы мне позволили Архиепископа превратить не в ''Странника'', а в ''Кардинала''. ''Странник'' не имеет никакого смысла а Кардинал есть в опере «''Жидовка''», следовательно и мне должны его позволить. Если же ты сам не попадёшь в Петербург, то не можешь ли поручить это Осип Ивановичу?<br />

Посылаю тебе также письмо Направника. Пожалуйста, потрудись ему что-нибудь ответить насчёт «Каприччио».<br />

Было бы хорошо, если б ты от меня или от себя послал два экземпляра оперы; один ''Направнику'', другой ''Кондратьеву''. <br />

I'm sending you a paper from the Censorship Bureau, sent to me by the director Kondratyev, together with the censor's omissions from the libretto. You'll see the peculiar changes they demanded from me: however, I had to acquiesce. I've made some insignificant changes to words here and there, and I had to make a cut in the final scene. <br />
<br />
You seem to be intending to go to [[Petersburg]]. Would you be so good as to intercede with the Principal Directorate for the Press, so that they will allow me to turn the Archbishop into a ''Cardinal'', instead of a ''Pilgrim''. ''Pilgrim'' makes no sense whatsoever, and there's a Cardinal in the opera "''La Juive''", and therefore they ought to allow me to do the same. If you don't make it to [[Petersburg]] yourself, couldn't you entrust [[Osip Ivanovich]] with this?<br />
<br />
I'm also sending you a letter from [[Nápravník]]. Please, kindly send something in reply to him regarding the "[[Italian Capriccio|Capriccio]]".<br />
<br />
It would be nice if you were to send out two copies of the opera from me or yourself; one to ''[[Nápravník]]'', the other to ''Kondratyev''.<br />
