	I received very sad news from [[Petersburg]] yesterday. My opera has been postponed until next season, since there's barely enough time to stage two operas that were in the repertoire before mine: "''Halka''" and "''The Croatian Girl''". Therefore, I'm unlikely to be in [[Petersburg]], but I'll write to you from here for ''maslenitsa'', just as like with [[Tolya]] last year. News that the opera can't possibly be staged is unpleasant for me, especially in financial terms. However, I'll send you the amount I owe you for your uniform in any ~~event~~. 			I'm very glad that you liked ''[[Artôt]]''; this is a testament to your understanding. It's hard to imagine a more excellent singer. Note also that she isn't a concert singer at all, and without hearing her at the opera, it's not possible to form a proper notion of her. Our concerts have begun, and 3 subscriptions to the Italian Opera notwithstanding, we have more than 800 members, and by the end there will be 1200, while in your unfortunate swamp there are only 210 of them in all.

Ты справедливо сравнивал себя однажды с ''Авдотьей Яковлевной''. Твои письма всегда по стилю сходны с её эпистолами. Я даже удивляюсь, что ты не подписываешься, как она в последнем письме: «''дышащая Вами А. Б.''». Неужели ты не можешь обойтись без сетований на судьбу, что тебя никто не любит, что ты одинок и так далее?.. И как это ты не поймёшь, обладая художественным тактом, что эта вечная песнь разочарования уже давно сделалась приторно скучна. Все тебя окружающие и все близкие ровно ничем не дают тебе поводов распевать в минорном тоне о том, что ты не оценён и не понят. Напротив, все, сколько мне известно, к тебе расположены, начиная с Папаши и кончая Пашенькой; вся эта разочарованность есть нечто напускное и неестественное в твои годы. Ну, довольно ругаться.

Вчера я получил из Петербурга очень грустное известие. Опера моя отложена до будущего сезона, так как едва хватает времени поставить две оперы, раньше моей стоявшие на репертуаре: «''Галька''» и «''Кроатка''». Итак, я в Петербурге вряд ли буду, а тебя выпишу сюда на ''масленицу'', так, как в прошлом году Толю. Известие об невозможности поставить оперу мне в особенности в денежном отношении неприятно. Впрочем, должную мною на твою обмундировку сумму пришлю во всяком случае.

В нравственном отношении это на меня подействует худо, т. е. я недели три ничего не в состоянии буду писать; по крайней мере в эту минуту я без отвращения не могу думать о композиторстве. К счастью, заказанную тобой увертюру к «''Ромео и Джульетте''» я благополучно окончил, и в одном из следующих концертов она будет исполнена.

Очень рад, что ''Арто'' тебе понравилась; это свидетельствует о твоём понимании. Трудно себе представить более превосходную певицу. Заметь себе ещё, что она совсем не концертная певица и что, не слыхав её в опере, нельзя себе составить о ней надлежащего понятия. Концерты наши начались, и, несмотря на 3 абонемента итальянской оперы, у нас более 800 членов, а к концу их наберётся 1200, тогда как в Вашем несчастном болоте их всего только 210.

У бедного Балакирева едва только покрылись расходы; он мне пишет, что от волнений и забот у него начиналось воспаление в мозгу. Когда пройдёт моё отвращение к музыке, начну писать романсы, дабы нажить маленькую сумму денег. На днях был у Катерины Васильевны. С Бибиковым продолжаем часто видеться. Здесь прожил недели две Мещёрский.
