The fact that the opera won't be put on this season has upset all my plans; but what alarms me the most is the fact that I absolutely can't see how I can pay the amount I promised to [[Modest]]. Anyway, this is still a long way off. I was very glad to see [[Tolya]], although I don't like it that he went to [[Petersburg]] without any need to do so, just to spend money. Adamov writes that he has nothing to worry about; he's almost certain to secure a position. It's a shame that the railway doesn't run straight to ''[[Kamenka]]'', otherwise I would probably come to you for Christmas. I really want to see you all. I kiss [[~~Leva~~]] and all the children. Вера Вас[ильевна] прожила здесь недели три и уехала наконец дня три тому назад с Толей, который поехал в Петербург хлопотать о месте. Я виделся с ней неоднократно. Её обращение со мной мне не очень-то понравилось; в нем весьма заметно тайное желание дать мне почувствовать, что прежнее все кончилось. Мне с ней от этого как-то неловко было. С Колей и Толей я на днях обедал у Лизав[еты] Серг[еевны]. Она очень любезна; Пётр Вас[ильевич] чрезвычайно мил. Но я всё-таки не могу к ним привыкнуть. Накануне отъезда Вер[ы] Вас[ильевны] были вечером у Катер[ины] Вас[ильевны] ''Переслени''. Она по-прежнему прелестна.

Не знаю, писал ли я тебе, что мои летние труды напрасны; опера моя идти в нынешнем сезоне не может. Я сначала впал в меланхолию, получив это грустное известие, — но теперь привык к ужасной мысли, что я был глупейшим образом обманут—и успокоился. Начинаю сильно подумывать о новой опере, — но не могу остановиться ни на одном сюжете; а покамест написал увертюру и 6 романсов. В Петербург не поеду; антипатия моя к этому омерзительном городу делается все сильней и сильней.

В[ера] В[асильевна] говорила мне, что ты совсем помирилась с Ник[олаем] Вас[ильевичем]; значит вы опять надолго прикованы к Каменке. Может быть, летом опять увидимся, едва ли удастся съездить полечиться за границу. То обстоятельство, что оперу не дадут в нынешнем сезоне, расстроило все мои планы; но что всего более меня пугает, так это то, что я решительно не вижу, из каких сумм выдам обещанную Модесту сумму. Впрочем, до этого ещё далеко. Очень рад был увидеть Толю, хотя мне и не нравится, что он поехал в Петербург без всякой надобности, только чтоб деньги тратить. Адамов пишет, что ему нечего беспокоиться; что место он наверное получит. Жалко, что железная дорога не идёт прямо до ''Каменки'', а то бы наверное приехал к тебе на рождество; так хочется взглянуть на вас всех. Целую Леву и всех детей. Кланяйся Ник[олаю] Вас[ильевичу], Плескому, Дериченке, няне Фёдоре и всем.
