	I would so like, dear [[Modya]], to recount to you the endlessly comical episodes in the relationship between [[Kondratyev]] and Golitsyn, that have come about as a result of my ''worldly'' life. The fact is that Golitsyn has been pestering me for ages to visit the consul Ikskulsha; for some reason, [[Kondratyev]] never wanted this, and thought that Ikskulsha should really invite me herself, so that I could oblige her with my visit. It was only yesterday that I finally realised what was going on. [[Kondrashon]] was offended that Ikskulsha n'a pas recherché sa connaissance, and that she never invited him; Golitsyn is offended that the Bobrinskys ignore him. They have now poured out their ''dépit'' to the maximum regarding my visits to both houses. Yesterday a massive scene played out after dinner at ~~Golitsyns~~, in the presence of Lady Hamilton and several other persons. Both were so beside themselves that I feared for them both. Golitsyn ''suffoquait'' in the literal sense — he lost his voice from the excitement. But how comical [[Kondratyev]] was, both during the scene and after, when we were left alone, and he began to demonstrate me that ''Golitsyn'' wasn't ''his'' society, that, without being haughty, he cannot help but be aware of his superior upbringing in comparison with Golitsyn's vacuousness, etc. etc. The upshot is that [[Kondrashon]] is already sulking at me because I'm going to Ikskulsha's today, and that ''l'entente cordiale'' has been greatly shaken. I can imagine you laughing and being astonished by ''my worldliness''! I don't understand how I have the fortitude to withstand this mad life! Naturally, I'm not in a good mood, and my stay in [[Rome]] has been poisoned, but I haven't altogether lost heart, and still find it possible to enjoy ''[[Rome]]'', albeit in fits and starts. 	До чего мне хотелось бы, милый Модя, рассказать тебе бесконечно комические эпизоды в отношениях Кондратьева и Голицына, происшедшие вследствие моей ''светской'' жизни. Дело в том, что Голицын давно уж приставал ко мне, чтобы я побывал у посланницы Икскульши; Кондратьев же этого почему-то ни за что не хотел и находил, что Икскульша должна чуть ли не сама ко мне приехать, чтобы я осчастливил её своим посещением. Только вчера я наконец понял, в чем дело. Кондрашон в обиде, что Икскульша n'a pas recherché sa connaissance и что никогда не звала его; — Голицын же в обиде, что его игнорируют Бобринские. До чего мне хотелось бы, милый Модя, рассказать тебе бесконечно комические эпизоды в отношениях Кондратьева и Голицына, происшедшие вследствие моей ''светской'' жизни. Дело в том, что Голицын давно уж приставал ко мне, чтобы я побывал у посланницы Икскульши; Кондратьев же этого почему-то ни за что не хотел и находил, что Икскульша должна чуть ли не сама ко мне приехать, чтобы я осчастливил её своим посещением. Только вчера я наконец понял, в чем дело. Кондрашон в обиде, что Икскульша n'a pas recherché sa connaissance и что никогда не звала его; — Голицын же в обиде, что его игнорируют Бобринские. Свой ''dépit'' они теперь и излили во всем объёме по поводу моих посещений того и другого дома. Вчера произошла крупная сцена после обеда у Голицына, в присутствии леди Гамильтон и нескольких других лиц. Оба были до того вне себя, что я за обоих боялся: Голицын ''suffoquait'' в буквальном смысле: — у него пропал от волнения голос. Но до чего был комичен Кондратьев и во время сцены и после, когда мы остались одни и он мне стал доказывать, что ''Голицын'' не ''его'' общество, что, не будучи самолюбивым. он не может же не сознавать своего превосходного развития в сравнении с пустотой Голицына и т. д. и т. д. В результате же вышло то, что Кондрашон на меня уже дуется за то, что я еду сегодня к Икскульше что ''l'entente cordiale'' сильно пошатнулась. Воображаю, как ты смеёшься и удивляешься ''моей светскости''! Я не понимаю каким образом у меня хватает сил переносить эту безумную жизнь? Конечно, я не в духе и моё пребывание в Риме отравлено, — но ещё не совсем пал духом и нахожу возможным даже урывками наслаждаться ''Римом''. О société, что может быть ужаснее, несноснее и глупее! Вчера вечером я был у Графини Соллогуб (дочь Боде, жена Феди), страшно скучал, но геройски скрывал это, и как ты думаешь, что мне при прощании сказала Бодишна? «''Не понимаю, отчего Вы раньше ко мне не пришли. Я уверена, что после этого вечера Вы раскаиваетесь, что потеряли так много времени, прежде чем узнали меня''». ''Textuel''! Она меня жалеет!

Чтобы их всех черт побрал! Чтобы ты мог понять, как велика разница между этим и прошлогодним ,пребыванием, то достаточно сказать, что я из 7 дней недели только раз обедал дома. Послезавтра утром уезжаем в Неаполь. Завтра второй обед у Бобринских.

Был вечер у Икскулей с гостями, графами, князьями, дипломата, и я ''играл очень много''!!! Господи, до чего я дожил! Впрочем, Икскульша (о которой Н[иколай] Дм[итриевич] говорит не иначе как с пеной у рта), оказалась очень симпатичной и милой женщиной. Я в большой суете. Через час, т. е. в час, у меня rendez-vous с (...) <ref name="note1"/>, а в 8 обед у Бобринских. Завтра уезжаю в 9 ч[асов] утра. Обнимаю и целую тебя и Колю.
