	The last day in [[Naples]] left the worst impression on me. That day I went with [[Kondratyev]] to the "''Edinburgh''". There the officers received us cordially, and the general appearance of the frigate seemed ~~sympathetic~~ to me. But then a message from the "''Svetlana''" appeared, conveying an invitation to us from the senior officer ''Skrydlov'' (the hero) to immediately come to them. Making our way down to the cabin, we found Skrydlov absolutely drunk, and immediately a mad general drinking binge began, in which I unwillingly participated. ''Skrydlov'' behaved like a rowdy [[Moscow]] merchant of the 3rd guild. We had to force our way out of there, but not before the disaffected hero had forced all his subordinates, both officers and sailors, to act out all sorts of buffoonery in front of us, and forced them to cry hurrah to us, to climb ropes and masts, to cry that they were pleased with everything and they loved him, etc. etc. I came away with such a horrid impression from this visit to the "Svetlana" that after we extricated ourselves from there, I burst into tears. Surely this was neither the time nor the place for a Russian officer, and a hero at that, to act outrageously, to get drunk and force his subordinates to do all sorts of buffoonery in the spirit of: don't get in my way! Но тут явился посланный от «''Светланы''», передавший нам приглашение старшего офицера ''Скрыдлова'' (героя) немедленно прибыть к ним. ~~Спу-стившись~~ в каюту, мы нашли Скрыдлова совершенно пьяного, и тотчас же началась совершенно сумасшедшая всеобщая попойка, в которой и я поневоле принимал участие. ''Скрыдлов'' вёл себя как разгулявшийся московский купец 3-ей гильдии. Мы насилу вырвались оттуда, и то не прежде чем расходившийся герой не заставил всех своих подчинённых, как офицеров так и матросов, разыграть перед нами всякие шутовства~~. н~~ заставлял их кричать нам ура, лазить по канатам и мачтам. кричать, что они всем довольны и любят его и т. д. и т. д. Я вынес из этого посещения «Светланы» впечатление столь отвратительное, что разразился слезами, когда мы удалились оттуда. Не правда ли, что не место и не время русскому офицеру, да ещё герою, — безобразничать, пьянствовать и заставлять своих подчинённых проделывать всякие шутовства в духе: ндраву моему не препятствуй!
