What a precious personality Miss Eastwood is! I've never appreciated her so much as during these two days. In fact, so far as possible, she is a substitute for the absent parents of all four children. Flegont Konstantinovich is busy gardening, and thanks to his care the garden is in excellent condition; he is a good, kind person, and this is a great happiness for the children. I visited the big house several times, and found, to my great delight, that Aleksandra Ivanovna was not as blind as I thought. I'm still walking very little. I've been with the children far more than in normal circumstances, and out of habit I find myself somewhat tiring, but I am incredibly touched by their affection and courtesy towards me. I want to start working on music with [[Bobik]] tomorrow. Generally, although I'm a little sad, it's also gratifying to feel at home, in my own corner, and most importantly, in the hearts of these dear children, so comforted and heartened by my arrival. Forgive me for not writing in detail. as I have many letters to write now. I kiss you hard, my dear fellow. Приехал благополучно, но в грустном настроении, отчасти от мысли, что попаду в осиротелый, пустой дом, отчасти от убийственной погоды. Дети встретили меня с невероятною радостью: видно, что я отчасти удовлетворил их нетерпение видеть близких. Тася меня поразила своей серьёзностью; она очень развилась и выросла морально и физически. Митю я нашёл задумчивым и грустным. Бобик веселее, но в удвоенной его ко мне нежности я усматриваю тоже неопределённое тоскование. Ука не отходит от меня, когда я выхожу из своей комнаты. Какая драгоценная личность Miss Eastwood! Никогда я так не ценил её, как в эти два дня. Она в самом деле, по мере возможности, заменяет для всех четырёх детей отсутствующих родителей. Флегонт Конст[aнтинович] занимается садоводством, и сад, благодаря его заботам, в превосходном состоянии; он хороший, добрый человек, и это для детей большое счастье. В большом доме был несколько раз и нашёл, к своей величайшей радости, Александру Ивановну не столь слепой, как думал. Гулял ещё очень мало. Я бываю с детьми гораздо больше, чем при нормальной обстановке, и немножко, с непривычки, устаю, но меня несказанно трогает их нежность и ласковость со мной. Хочу начать завтра заниматься музыкой с Бобиком. Вообще же, хотя мне и немножко грустно, — но и отрадно чувствовать себя дома, в своём уголке, и главное, среди этих дорогих детских душ, так утешенных и ободрённых моим приездом.
