	Всё, что здесь происходит, так безотрадно и так не по мне, что тяжело и писать. Впрочем, что касается здоровья двух главных лиц, т. е. Саши и Тани, все довольно изрядно. Первые дни по приезде Тани были ужасны. Она явилась в состоянии, близком к помешательству, вся пропитанная эфиром, морфином и всякого рода ужасами. Она даже пьянствовала в Москве и дорогой. Разумеется, все, что Саша выиграла в выздоравливание, разом ушло назад. Моё положение было поистине ужасно. На другой день после Таниного приезда она, сидя вечером у меня в комнате, начала говорить о Трубецком, и произошла невероятная сцена. Она считает себя обесчещенной, погибшей, недостойной принимать ласки родных, ибо Трубецкой был удержан ею ценой напряжения всех сил только ''там, где уж всё было бы кончено''. Она кричала, рыдала, билась в моих руках в какой-то страшной дрожи и вообще являла собой девушку, доведённую до безысходного отчаяния. А между тем Саша брала ванну, и я ежеминутно боялся, что она все это услышит. Кое-как удалось мне Таню успокоить и скрыть от Саши эту сцену. Должно быть, однако ж, этот нервный припадок и мои утешения и уговаривания имели на неё благодетельное влияние. На другой день ей было лучше. Я старался занимать её чтением, игрой на ф[ортепиано] в 4 руки, разговорами о посторонних предметах. Затем прошли ещё два хороших дня, так что вчера Таня была совсем весёленькая; Саша тоже расцвела. Из физических страданий у Тани только по ночам те же приливы к сердцу и обмирания, которые и у меня бывают. Увы! я начинаю побаиваться, что все это хорошее рухнет, и вот почему. Танину относительную весёлость я боюсь объяснить не столько моими стараниями и всеобщими ласками, сколько тем, что ... она надеялась увидаться с ''Ганецким''. Дело в том, что третьего дня ''Нату'' Саша послала в Елизаветград с дипломатическим поручением. Только теперь узнал я, в чем дело. Чтобы залучить ''Ганецкого'', Саша изобрела девичник Вари и послала Нату добыть Ганецкого; а между тем Таня поставила его портрет в лучшей рамке и среди цветов у себя в комнате. Ната только что воротилась. ''Ганецкий'' по всему Елизаветграду кричит, что радуется Таниному отказу и что его счастие, что он так дёшево от делался от увлечения столь нехорошей девушкой. Увы! ничто, кроме кокетничания с первым попавшимся мальчишкой, не может, по-видимому, удовлетворить Таню. Д где их достать! Вообще и грустно и даже немножко досадно на Сашу, когда она всему этому потакает. Она, напр[имер], уверила Таню, что в неё смертельно влюблён ''Флегонт''. Вчера она даже вообразила, что видела его плачущим. А мне достоверно известно, что он влюблён в горничную девку аптекаря ''Слонского''.

Левы всё эти дни не было. Он ездил нанимать кварт[иру] в Киев и ещё для разных дел. Когда и ''Ната'' тоже уехала, то мне было ужасно жутко и страшно. Саша собирается в скором времени в Карлсбад. Желательно, чтобы это случилось скорее.

Мне невозможно отсюда теперь уехать. Я положительно нужен им; т. е. нужно, чтобы кто-нибудь здоровый находился среди них. Да к тому ж, уж если бы я теперь уехал, то вернуться сюда было бы трудно. Но если можно будет, то я съезжу дня на два в Киев, чтобы насладиться одиночеством. Я совершенно здоров и даже нервы мои в отличном состоянии, но не скажу, чтобы здесь теперь было весело жить. А главное, мучит всегда неопределённый страх, а иногда и чувство какой-то обиды за всё унижения, которые выпали на долю бедной Тани. Я докончу письмо вечером.

Ничего, всё благополучно. Мы с Натой скрыли правду Самберг, который хотел рассказать о сплетнях Ганецкого, я предупредил. Таня сегодня очень весела и мила.
