Dear Sergey Ivanovich!
Your letter afforded me great pleasure . I have been thinking a lot about you over the last few days, and the reason for this is as follows. Not far from here there lives a certain Mr Shestoperov, and this Shestoperov has a son, a boy aged 9, about whom I had long ago heard that he showed extraordinary musical abilities . I finally set off and visited them, and not only was I not disappointed in my expectations, but, on the contrary, I was quite astonished and captivated by this boy. He has been learning so-so, hasn't heard anything apart from his own music, and yet he played 4-hand duets of several overtures and symphonies with me in such a way that it was as if before his coming into this world, when he was still up there somewhere, he had managed to hear and play all the music there is. He improvises delightfully, with modulations, variations on themes, progressions, and in fact it even sounds rather polished. Well, in short, he possesses a powerful and undeniable talent. In August his parents are moving to Moscow, where they want to enrol the boy in Katkov's lyceum , though at the same time they intend to give him a solid musical education. And it is in connection with this that I thought about you. I would like to entrust this boy to you. What I would most of all wish is that you yourself might teach him (I think once a week would be sufficient), and I take the liberty of asking you emphatically to take him on; but if this should prove to be impossible because of your complicated duties at the Conservatory, then let him be taught by one of your male or female students, only it must absolutely be under your supervision. In any case, I shall send this boy to you and kindly ask you to make arrangements for his musical studies. One remarkable thing is that this boy reminds me strikingly of how you were at his age: he has the same expression on his face, the same constitution (somewhat podgy and lymphatic), the same excessive cleanliness, so unnatural in a boy, and even his very musical talent resembles yours very much. Golubchik! Do not refuse my request to take on the supervision of his studies.

I shall not write anything about myself. All this time I have been out of sorts due to domestic reasons . I am working on an arrangement of the chants of the Vesper Service, but I am doing little and, so it seems, badly too. Anyway, I am enjoying perfect health. I won't bid you farewell, but shall say, rather, see you soon, since it is very likely that I shall come to Selishche shortly.
Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
Give my regards to the Maslovs and say to them that I shall soon see them too in Selishche.

The curriculum of this prestigious school was dominated by the classics and humanities.</ref>
