	I suffered a terrible shock yesterday. While drinking tea on the balcony (when [[Lyova]] was going off to see Nikolay Vasilyevich), I heard a commotion and cries: "Send for a doctor! Send for [[Lev Davydov\|Lev Vasilyevich]]!". Fyodora begged me to run quickly to [[Tanya]]'s room. I found her in a state of madness: she was emitting wild cries: "I am dying! Send for the priest! I have poisoned myself! The morphine has hit a vein!", etc. I won't describe everything that ~~ensured~~, but I'm hastening to reassure you. The whole upshot is that the day before, Roman Yefimovich, in order to frighten her, told her that if she, when injecting morphine, hits a ''vein'', then death is inevitable. I don't know why, but she imagined that this had happened. Half an hour later she was sleeping completely peacefully. I cannot express how shocked I was by this whole scene. I decided at once that I myself should leave for at least a while, in order not to fall ill and be a burden to them. By God, I could not stand it and might go seriously mad, living under the same roof with [[Tanya]]. Today we are gathering for Varya's wedding, and the marriage ceremony is tomorrow. Many guests are expected. Today there is a supper in the big house for 60 people, and tomorrow both lunch and dinner there.
