Модя! Я получил сегодня твоё письмо с разными вопросами и отвечаю на них.

1) Над[ежда] Филарет[овна] в Москве. Большую часть лета она провела в Браилове, занимаясь своими делами, которые очень запутаны. В переписке нашей много говорилось а принятии Левой на себя её браиловских дел. Тут она выказала всю свою ''деловую'' женскую несостоятельность. Уже 6ыл назначен день, когда Лева должен был приехать в Браилов осмотреть имение, но вдруг она написала, что так как он не желает совсем отдаться Браилову и бросить здешние дела, — то лучше 6ы не приезжал. Лева очень был рад, что этим дела кончилась, ибо ничего серьёзного выйти из всего этого не могло, во 1-х, потому, что она хотела остаться для него невидимой и вести переговоры чрез посредников, а во 2-х, потому, что ещё в прошлом году весь Браилов по частям уже отдан в аренду, Потом. недавно, она опять начала просить Леву о том же и в таких выражениях, как будто ещё ни разу не было об этом речи. Опять Лева собрался по пунктам отвечать на её предложения, как вдруг летит телеграмма, что она его благодарит, извиняется, но просит не отвечать на письмо по этому предмету. Теперь она выгодно продала акции Либаво-Роменской дороги (за 3 800 000) и дела её поправились, но Браилов всё-таки висит у неё на шее и, не принося доходу, напротив, требует капиталов; а капиталы как-то и где-то заложены, — ну, словом, путаница. Она по-прежнему и в том же духе ведёт со мной аккуратную переписку. В настоящую минуту она в Москве и нездорова. Когда Саша проезжала за границу, Н[адежда] Ф[иларетовна] [просила], чтобы сыновья её представились ей в Жмеринке. Это так и было. Мальчики эти очень понравились Леве и Саше и приглашены в Каменку. Мне ужасно будет ''неловко с ними'', если они теперь приедут, и я всячески хитрю и маневрирую, чтобы поездка эта не состоялась ''без Саши'', которая одна только может облегчить мою обязанность занять этих гостей. Ах, с каким бы я удовольствием теперь удрал из Каменки на время! Увы! я менее свободен, чем это кажется. Вот уже ровно год, что я никогда почти не нахожусь там, где хочу, и постоянно в зависимости от разных соображений и отношений.

У Саши вышли 2 больших камня; она много страдала, но воды действуют. Таня ''гораздо лучше'' себя ведёт: меньше спит, ходит гулять, появляется к обеду и ест. Вчера, напр[имер], она с Левой ходила в Тростянку, а потом была в церкви. Многое ещё можно про неё сказать непохвального, — но и то слава Богу, что она. наконец, ''старается'' быть здоровой.

Толя помешался ''на охоте''. Целый день он или собирается на охоту, или на охоте, или жалуется на усталость от охоты. Я очень хвалю в нем эту страсть.

Мальчики приняты в гимназию и уезжают завтра. Они покамест будут жить с Флег[онтом] Конст[антиновичем] в Гранд-отеле. 1-го октя6ря все семейство переедет в Киев.

Представь, что я третий раз переписываю 1-ыя страницы этого второго листа, ибо 2 раза я переходил от изложения фактов к жалобам и иеремиадам, а потом вспоминал, что я же каждый вечер благодарю бога за ниспосылаемые на меня блага. И действительно, никто менее меня не имеет права жаловаться, на судьбу. Если я часто испытываю желание жаловаться и плакаться, то это, я полагаю, зависит, от состояния моего организма, весьма раздражительного и капризного.

Чуть было опять не перешёл к излияниям, которые неминуемо перешли бы в жалобы, и письмо опять было бы разорвано.

Сейчас ещё получил письмо, в коем ты сообщаешь. что Г[ерман] К[арлович] отпускает тебя за границу. ''Я ужасно, ужасно, ужасно'' рад; это было просто почти необходимо для моего благополучия. Однако ж всё-таки я расположен обругать Конради за то, что даёт мало денег, хотя, слава Богу, курс повышается. Я полагаю, Гришу Сангурского не трудно будет залучить, но, для того чтобы я начал действовать, напиши мне ''наверное'', решаешься ли ты на это. Я, с своей стороны, очень этому сочувствую.

У меня в голове делается невыносимый сумбур, как только начинаю думать о ближайшем будущем, но чувствую, что мне просто необходимо с тобой повидаться, и поэтому так или иначе я буду в Гранкине. Ведь нужно поговорить нам о загранице и о том, что, как и когда?

Толя уезжает 30 августа; Алёша получает, отпуск 1-го сент[ября] и сначала хочет, заехать к матери дней на 5, следовательно прибудет сюда около 8 сент[ября]. Вот этим-то антрактом я, вероятно, и воспользуюсь, чтобы у тебя побывать.

Модя! Пиши мне, по возможности, мало о наших заграничных планах, пока Толя здесь. Мне ужасно бывает, жалко его, когда мы собираемся ''туда'', а он, бедный, сиди, в своей Москве.
