Душа моя! Кольрейфу я действительно должен 300 р[ублей]. Так как я думал, что плачу ему проценты на прежнем основании, то мало тревожился этим долгом и собирался погасить его 1-го октября. Теперь я попрошу тебя сделать одно из двух: или 1) сказать Кольрейфу или Кольрейфше, чтобы они соблаговолили подождать до 1-го октября, или же 2) заплатить им, если это тебе не трудно, ''200'' р[ублей], остальные онипол учат 1-го октября, и тогда же я разъясню вопрос о процентах.

Я тебе послал с Сангурским порядочное количество приготовленного уже Бортнянского, но меня смущает, что гравирование начнётся не по порядку. Это ничего?

Можешь, если находишь нужным, говорить Фирциганову и им подобным об истинных размерах гонорара, но прошу тебя убедительно даже не намекать никогда насчёт M[ada]me Meкк. ''Давыдов'' не только предлагал, но ''упрашивал, умолял'' меня принять это место на следующих условиях: иметь два раза в неделю классы по 2 часа и давать их, если хочу, на дому. В середине я могу езжать на 2 месяца. За это я получал бы ''6000''. Конечно, эти условия ''неестественно'' для меня выгодны и чрезмерны; но объяснение их очень просто. Давыдов тогда только что поссорился с Н[иколаем] Гр[игорьевичем] и приглашал меня не столько для чести иметь меня под своим началам, сколько из желания нанести неприятность Н[иколаю] Г[ригорьевичу]. I sent Sangursky to you with a decent quantity of [[Bortnyansky]] that's already been prepared, but I'm perplexed that the engraving will be starting out of order. Is this important?

If you find it necessary, you can tell Firtsiganov and the like about the true size of the fee, but I earnestly request you to not even hint about anything to do with Madame [[Meck]]. ''[[Karl Davydov|Davydov]]'' not merely offered, but ''implored and begged'' me to accept this position on the following terms: to have two-hourly classes twice a week, and if I wanted, to give them at home. Of course, these conditions were ''contrived'' for my benefit and excessive; but the explanation is very simple. [[Karl Davydov|Davydov]] had just quarrelled with [[Nikolay Grigoryevich]], and invited me not so much for having me on his staff, but out of a desire to cause unpleasantness for [[Nikolay Grigoryevich]]. I'm not recounting all this so that you will repeat it, but to explain the exaggeratedly favourable terms, and so that you don't think I've made something up. When his first bout of hatred towards [[Nikolay Grigoryevich]] had passed, [[Karl Davydov|Davydov]] calmed down, and since then he's never renewed his attempts to entice me. I would prefer you not to repeat all this: it would be unpleasant for me if [[Karl Davydov|Davydov]] learned that I'd been ''bragging'' about his approaches.
