The day after tomorrow, [[Lyova]], [[Vera]] and Korsakov will be coming here for three days. Модя, дурной мальчик! отчего ты не пишешь мне? Над[ежда] Ф[иларетовна], приехавшая в одно время с тобой в Рим, уже писала мне, а ты нет ещё!

Сообщаю тебе прежде всего известие, что ''Вера'' помолвлена за ''Римского-Корсакова''. Саша в субботу 10 числа приехала в Киев вместе с женихом. Свадьба будет 4-го ноября, и затем молодые тотчас едут в Орианду, а оттуда вместе с Вел[иким] кн[язем] на всю зиму в Париж. Послезавтра Лева с Верой и Корсаковым приезжают на три дня сюда. Про себя скажу тебе, что я не особенно весел и счастлив, — но живу так себе, думая единственно о том, как бы поскорее кончить работу. Представь, что в 8 дней я сделал 20 переложений больших двуххорных концертов Бортн[янского]. Остаётся ещё довольно много, но всё-таки дело подвинулось. Устаю я иногда страшно, до отупения, так, что перестаю понимать, что мне говорят, и, пришедши в большой дом, злюсь на все и на всех. Вообще, проводя теперь так много часов с ними, я тем более всех их люблю, чем менее со мной говорят. Но иногда выдаются прелестные часы, когда, отрешившись от вечно грызущего неопределённого чувства недовольства настоящим, я могу созерцать всю необъятность нравственной красоты этих трёх ангелов. Я говорю конечно об А[лександре] И[вановне], Л[изавете] В[асильевне] и А[лександре] В[асильевне]. Тогда мне хочется плакать и пасть к их ногам.

Жизнь моя уже очень точно определилась и вошла в известные рамки. Все, что малейшим образом нарушает раз установленный порядок, приводит меня в ярость. Влад[имир] Андр[еевич] в часы работы иногда заходит и ''беседует'': ах, как я его ненавижу в эти минуты!

О ''Риме'' я решительно не позволяю себе думать покамест, ибо Каменка теперь так погана (весь воздух на пространстве многих вёрст заражён вонью Тясмина), что если много думать о Риме, то не выдержишь и уедешь... а ехать ещё нельзя. Нужно кончить работу, нужно быть на свадьбе, нужно даже, кажется, ''всё-таки'' в Москву съездить и уж потом в Рим. Думаю, что около 10 или 15 ноября я попаду к Вам. Но довольно, а то тяжело будет вернуться к действительности. Толя, вероятно, будет шафером у Веры. Я получил от него приятное письмо: Гончаров призывал его, хвалил егоза отличную службу и объявил, что представил его к награде. Вообще, письмо весёлое.
