Я третьего дня хотел тебе написать одну вещь, да позабыл. Вот в чем дело. Если б Ник[олай] Григ[орьевич] был жив, то, по примеру прежних лет, я бы и в нынешнем году получил обычную ''дань'' с РМО, размер коей 300 р[ублей] и в виде исключения 1000, когда давался «Онегин», и в прошлом году по поводу ''обедни''. Особенного случая нет, и я не претендую на прибавку, но свои обычные 300 р[ублей] очень желал бы получить, ибо в настоящую минуту не то что нуждаюсь, но весьма и весьма обрадовался бы означенной сумме. Если это не неделикатно, если ты не усматриваешь в этом чего-либо неловкого, то нельзя ли тебе сказать Дирекции, что, мол, так и так. Думаю, что моя ''серенада'' исполнялась или будет исполняться, и, следовательно, есть повод придраться к ней и назначить обычное вознаграждение. В случае если дело сие устроится, — то прошу тебя прислать мне не деньги, а вексель (здесь страшно плохо ценят 100 р[ублей] билеты) {{und2|по предъявлении}} и вложить его не в простое письмо (письма страшно часто пропадают), а в заказное. Весьма буду благодарен, если осуществится это дело.

There was something I wanted to write to you about a couple of days ago, but I forgot. Here's the thing. If [[Nikolay Grigoryevich]] were alive then, following the precedent of previous years, then I would have received the customary ''tribute'' from the RMS this year, amounting to 300 rubles, or exceptionally 1000, when ''[[Onegin]]'' was on, and last year with regard to the ''mass''. There are no special circumstances, and I'm not seeking an increase, but I should very much like to receive my customary 300 rubles, because although at the present moment I don't need it, I would be extremely happy to have the designated amount. If this isn't indelicate, and if you don't see anything awkward in this, could you then ask the Directorate to cough up? I think that my ''Serenade'' either has been or will be performed, and therefore there's no reason to quibble and not designate the customary reward. In the event that this matter is settled, then I ask you not to send me the money, but a cheque instead (they take to 100 ruble notes very badly here) {{und2|upon presentation}}, and not to enclose it in an ordinary letter (letters here vanish alarmingly often), but in a registered one.
