	I have the most curious correspondence with [[Kotek]]. I had no reply to my letter, which I told you about in [[Kiev]], but instead he went to [[Petersburg]] and, on his return, wrote that he couldn't play because Sauret would be playing my [[Violin Concerto\|concerto]]. I replied that firstly, Sauret was also frightened and didn't play, and secondly that it wasn't about [[Sauret]] or even about the concerto, but rather that I ought to have expected more self-sacrifice for my sake, more civic courage and bravery from him; in short, I did not want to be disappointed in him, but I had to be. Again, he didn't reply to this letter for ages, until finally yesterday I received the most stupid letter from him. At first he justifies himself by saying that he only received the invitation a month before the concert and therefore couldn't learn it, while before that he'd been learning it for months. In the second half of the letter he says it that it's strange to insist that he perform an "''unplayed''" concerto in an unfamiliar city at a time when Sarasate was there. At the same time, he says: "this is just the same as telling someone: lend me a ruble, or I'll never forgive you!". I replied to this stupid and even slightly impertinent letter today in the way it deserves. Indeed! It's sad to say — [[Kotek]] has slipped up, and shown a rather miserable side to himself. The need to find [[Tanya]] a husband and to be rid of her is becoming increasingly pressing. You're a fine one! In [[Kiev]] you spoke about your courtship with [[Konshina]] almost as if it were a fait accomplit — and now you're backing down. If there is a reason for your desire to marry (and for me this is still in question), then you could conceive of no one better than [[Konshina]]. [[Kondratyev]] is leaving on 2nd January, and his family will follow him. I shall miss them very much at first, but the good thing about their departure is that I'll have more free time. We'll be having a Christmas tree on the 24th. On the 1st day of Christmas here I took a box at the circus. I just had to see what impression this spectacle would make on Grisha Sangursky! Я еженедельно получаю от Наты письма столь интересные и, несмотря на некоторую безграмотность, так очаровательно написанные, что для нас сущий праздник, когда приходят ея письма. Модест находит даже, что у неё литературный талант есть. Но сущность сообщаемых ею известий не особенно утешительна. Всё более и более потребность выдать Таню замуж и сбыть её с рук делается настоятельною. А ты хорош! В Киеве говорил о сватовстве на Коншиной почти как о деле решённом, — а теперь на попятный двор. Если есть основание желать, чтоб ты женился (а ещё для меня это вопрос), то уж лучшего ничего навыдумаешь, как Коншину. Кондратьев 2-го января уезжает, а вслед за ним и его семейство. 	Прекурьёзная у меня переписка с Котеком. На моё письмо. о котором я тебе говорил в Киеве, он мне не отвечал, а съездил сначала в Петербург и, уж возвратившись, написал, что не мог играть, ибо Соре будет играть мой концерт. Я ответил, что во 1-х, Соре тоже струсил и не играл, а во 2-х, что дело не в Соре и даже не в концерте, а в там, что я от него, Котика, должен был ожидать большего самопожертвования ради меня, большей смелости и гражданского мужества, одним словом, что мне не хотелось разочароваться в нем, о пришлось. На это письмо он опять долго не отвечал, и, наконец, вчера я получил от него преглупое письмо. Сначала он оправдывается тем, что только за месяц до концерта получил приглашение и поэтому не мог выучить, тогда как прежде он целыми месяцами зубрил его. Во второй же половине письма он говорит, что странно требовать от него, чтобы в незнакомом городе он исполнял «''неигранный''» концерт в то время, когда там был Саразат. При этом он говорит: «это всё равно, что сказать человеку: дай рубль взаймы, а не то я тебе этого никогда не прощу!».
