Even if I could answer your flattering proposal in the affirmative immediately, then in any case I could not have the first piece ready for the 15th. I tell you frankly that I should very much wish to accept your proposal, firstly because I am always happy to engage in composing for the piano, and secondly because I have great need of money, and you are offering me a generous reward. Лишь сегодня получил я письмо Ваше от 3-го числа; пока она съездила в Москву и попало сюда, прошла 11 дней. Если б я и мог на Ваше лестное предложение отвечать тотчас же утвердительно, то во всяком случае не могу приготовить 1-ой пиэсы к 15 числу. Скажу Вам откровенно, что мне очень хотелось бы принять Ваше предложение, во-1-х, потому, что я рад поводу позаняться фортепианными сочинениями, во-2-х, потому, что очень нуждаюсь в деньгах, а Вы предлагаете мне щедрое вознаграждение. Но не могу сейчас же дать Вам положительный ответ. Я не связан с П. И. Юргенсоном никаким формальным условием, но я связан с ним самою тесною дружбою и считаю себя очень много ему обязанным за множество дружеских услуг. Поэтому ни за что в мире не хотел бы нанести ему неприятность.
