|Translated text=Rome<br/>5/17 February 1882
My dear chap! I received your letter today with the remittance, which gave me considerable pleasure; however, naturally this was no less than the letter itself. For me, your letters are the greatest pleasure, consolation, entertainment and enjoyment for me. I'm not lying, by God. You are my singularly most reliable correspondent, through whom I learn everything of interest to me in Moscow, a place for which I continue to have a rather odd but acute fondness. I call it odd because, despite loving Moscow, I don't want to live in it. And yet it is precisely because I don't want to, that I love it very much. It would take a long time to explain such a psychological nicety.

Therefore, I am very happy with our correspondence — but one circumstance poisons the pleasure: which is that I cannot manage without pestering you for money. But old habits die hard. Thank you for the 500 francs. Alas, I will be asking you for more from Naples.

If you send me the overture at the end of this month or the beginning of the next, then I should have time to deliver it to you so that it will be ready by 1 May. On this occasion no-one besides myself is to blame for the delay; I held on to the first proofs for 3 months. But even in the event that we're late, this is no great misfortune. Believe me, it's better to be late than to publish it with a mass of errors. I don't see any need for the originals of Bortnyansky's concertos, but send them if you wish.

Flerov seems to be a most kind and dear person, but... I'm fleeing him for Naples. Yesterday he sat with me from 5 o'clock until 12 at night!!! There was one moment when I wanted to kill him, namely when he pestered me with the question, what pictures, what images sprang into my imagination when I was writing this or that! Ah well, that's his way! He is educated and well-read, but foolish and cloying.

Write to me, golubchik, whether anything is happening musically in Moscow during the summer, i.e. concerts. Why are you in a rush with the overture? Could it be that they want to play it? I have 4 days remaining here; on the 9/21 I'm going to Naples alone, to look for rooms for Modest and his entourage, and I'll write to everyone from there, whereupon I'll send you the new address.

Anatoly telegraphed to let me know about his engagement — but not a word since then. What is he doing? How does he seem?

I embrace you.
