We had considered waiting here for [[Tolya]] and his wife, in order to avoid all the wedding commotion — but since there is no way he will be here before 20th April, and I cannot wait that long, I've decided it's better to fit him out for the wedding on the way, and then after spending some time in [[Moscow]], to go to the country to save money. In a week and a half we are going to [[Florence]], where [[Modest]] will be settled for several weeks, but after spending 2 or 3 days there I'm going straight to [[Moscow]]. Милейший человек! Опять получил сегодня твоё письмо, и прочёл оное с наслаждением, и опять буду тебе отвечать лишь жалкой четвертушкой. Я сегодня болен желудком, и расположение духа самое отчаянное, несмотря на неслыханную красоту моря и Везувия, которые вижу из окна. Слушай, голубчик! Знавал ли ты человека более ненавистно-глупого, чем этот Флеров? Обрывок «Моск[овских] вед[омостей]», посланный тобой на днях, возбудил во мне ярость. Мало того, что он совершенно отравил мне последние дни в Риме, нет, нужно ещё преследовать меня, когда я удрал от него в Неаполь. Худшей пакости нельзя мне нанесть, как выставляя меня напоказ перед публикой, да ещё в виде человека, выигрывающего пикули (!!!) и на другой день ''уверявшего'' Флерова, что они прекрасны! Во-1-х, ''этого никогда не было'' и ничего я при нем не выигрывал, а лишь рассказал, что однажды прежде это со мной случилось. Во-2-х, кому интересно это читать? Ах, чёрт его возьми!

Вчера я послал тебе корректуру увертюры. Я сделал её очень внимательно и всё-таки не поручусь, что нет ''ни одной ошибки''. Пусть третью корректуру оделяет кто-нибудь, да, кроме того, нельзя ли Танеева попросить просмотреть? Больше ничего мне не посылай, ибо около благовещения я буду в Москве, если останусь жив и здоров. Было у нас предположение дождаться Толи с женой здесь, дабы избегнуть мне свадебной суеты, — но так как он никоим образом раньше 20-го апреля здесь не будет, а ждать так долго я не могу, — то я лучше решил снарядить его к венцу и в дорогу, а затем, пожив несколько времени в Москве, уехать в деревню копить деньги. Через полторы недели мы едем во Флоренцию, где Модест водворится на несколько недель, я же, проведя дня 2 или 3, еду прямо в Москву. I'm very happy that you triumphed over Bakhmetyev. You are absolutely right, it's not the old man's personality that's the issue, but rather the principle.
