Модест привёз сюда больную племянницу Таню, которая будет лечиться у Шарко. Вследствие этого все мои планы рушились, и я остаюсь на неопределённое, вероятно на долгое, время в Париже. Адрес тот же. Мне очень, конечно, не по душе это обязательное пребывание в Париже, но что же делать! Италию пришлось по боку.

1) Скажи Алексееву, что я совершенно не могу исполнить обещанное не имея под рукой клавираусцуга «''Жизнь за Царя''». Очень жаль, что, будучи в Москве, я не сделал этого. Если есть ещё время, то пришли мне клавираусцуг (с текстом) «Жизнь за царя», а также спроси у Николая Алекс[андровича], что именно нужно сделать, ибо ''я совершенно позабыл'' в чем дело и письменно объясни.

2) Я написал М. Эрдмансдёрферу письмо с извинениями, а тебе писал, чтобы ты дал ему, если он захочет, танцы из 1-го действия.

3) За Марью Марковну от души благодарю.

4) Я совсем и позабыл послать тебе полученное мною через тебя письмо какого-то попа. Посылаю тебе его и прошу выслать ему, разумеется за деньги, сокращённое руководство гармонии. Что касается ''инструмента'', то предоставляю тебе решить какой. ''Чакан'' что ли?

Спасибо тебе, голубчик, за комнаты. Но считаю долгом предупредить, что несмотря на всю благодарность, я всё-таки не сочту себя обязанным поступить в консерваторию деятелем, и почти наверное можно сказать, что скорее не поступлю.

[[Modest]] has brought our poorly niece [[Tanya]] here, who will be treated by Charcot. Consequently, all my plans have fallen through, and I'm remaining in [[Paris]] indefinitely, probably for a long while. The address is the same. Of course, my heart really isn't in this enforced captivity in [[Paris]], but what's to be done. Italy must be set aside.

1) Tell Alekseyev that I'm completely incapable of fulfilling my promise without having the piano reduction of "''A Life for the Tsar''" to hand. It's a great shame that I didn't do this while I was in [[Moscow]]. If there's still time, send me the piano reduction (with text) of "A Life for the Tsar", and also ask Nikolay Aleksandrovich to explain in writing exactly what needs to be done, because ''I've completely forgotten'' what the thing is.
