Нельзя себе представить человека более подходящего для должности компаньонки при Тане. Мы теперь гораздо покойнее и чередуемся с Модестом: один день я езжу к Тане, другой день он. Что касается лечения, то оно подвигается, т. е. дозы морфина постепенно уменьшаются, и Таня переносит это довольно хорошо. Толичка! Уж больше недели не пишешь ты, а мы с нетерпением ждём известий, ибо любопытно знать, что и как с Паней? Каков ребёнок? Какова кормилица и т. д. У нас ничего нового, за исключением присутствия при Тане Лиз[аветы] Мих[айловны]; каковое присутствие есть сущее благодеяние, ниспавшее на нас с неба. Нельзя себе представить человека более подходящего для должности компаньонки при Тане. Мы теперь гораздо покойнее и чередуемся с Модестом: один день я езжу к Тане, другой день он. Что касается лечения, то оно подвигается, т. е. дозы морфина постепенно уменьшаются, и Таня переносит это довольно хорошо. Весна медленно шаг за шагом приближается, — но она вообще не имеет здесь той прелести, как у Нас, ибо наша сразу, каким-то волшебством появляется. Модест оказался самым отчаянным театралом; положительно, дня он не может провести без театра. Я очень рад этому, ибо действительно в Париже нельзя долго прожить той тихой, однообразной жизнью, какую мы вели в Италии. Здесь нужно развлекаться и рассеиваться, иначе очень скоро становится скучно. Магазины, бульвары, улицы, блеск, шум — всё это прелестно на 2 недели, не больше; потом все это делается банальным и перестаёт занимать, а с другой стороны и дома не сидится, приятно, когда слышишь грохот улицы. Итак, лучше всего театр; но я всё-таки чаще сижу дома, чем бываю в театре, ибо, к сожаленью, настолько стар, что театральная страсть значительно во мне потухла. Какой милый Пётр Иванович: на Днях Прислал мне ещё успокоительную телеграмму насчёт Алёши. Что-то мой бедненький солдатик поделывает?

Знаешь, Анатоша? Что лучше будет, если ты не возьмёшь для меня дачу заранее, ибо ещё Бог знает, как я справлюсь с деньгами. Во всяком случае, если не у себя, то у вас, но с вами поживу летом. Когда приеду, увидим, можно ли будет мне самостоятельно устроиться. Обязательное пребывание в Париже и то обстоятельство, что у Тани денег нет, а у Левы просить невозможно, изменило все мои финансовые расчёты, но это между нами, и, ради бога, Леве ни слова, если его увидишь. Прости, голубчик, что пишу мало. Нужно ехать к Тане.
