	I think, [[Modichka]], that it's best of all if I write to you in the style of a diary. After seeing you off, I went to the nearest café, and wrote a letter to [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]]. From there I went to the ''Eden-Concert'', where again I didn't hear who I wanted, but I laughed a lot at the silly, but incredibly funny play: "''Les bottes de mon père''". Then after drinking 2 glasses of punch, I had the urge to go for a stroll, and went along the boulevard. There my interest was caught by ''Anton'', who was walking near the "Café de la Paix"; I began to watch all his manoeuvres, and these were most intriguing. Finally, imagining that I was completely safe from him, because, he seemed not to recognise me, without taking due precautions I headed home, when suddenly Anton, who was sitting on a bench with a negro, recognised and approached me. The negro also begged, and he was given 1½ francs. Anton explained to me that the negro is famous in the known world for the phenomenal size of certain appendages. At home I found incredible disorder, due to the fact that all your things were somehow piled up with mine. I put all this away and went to bed at 3 o'clock. I rose at 8 in a foul mood. However, after washing and drinking tea, I came to my senses and wrote. I had lunch somewhere unimportant near the opera. Since I had a pile of books to take to [[Tanya]], I wandered round first, then went home, collected the books and letters (including a lovely one from [[Nata]]) and went to see [[Tanya]]. I found them in the garden in the most pleasant cheerful mood. There's nothing new. I sat, chatted, and strolled around the garden. I only returned home at 5 o'clock, and worked until 7.30. Ungrateful humanity! I constantly curse this work, I'm burdened by it, I dream of finishing it, but what would I do without it? What a pity you didn't have the chance to enjoy strawberries like this. Then I went to the Palais Royal, and now I'm sitting in the Café near the "Comédie Française" and writing this letter.		I had dinner at the "Taverne de Londres"; it's very good and inexpensive; for dessert I ate strawberries with some special ''pot de crème'' in the shape of a pyramid, with a lid tied with elastic bands. It's best if I go home, read "''Bonheur des dames''" and go to bed early. You are now already in [[Berlin]]. But how long before you're in [[Piter]]? 	Я думаю, Модичка, лучше всего, я если напишу тебе в стиле своего дневника. Проводив тебя, пошёл в ближайшее кафе и написал письмо Над[ежде] Филар[етовне]. Оттуда прошёл в ''Eden-Concert'', где опять не слышал кого хотелось, но зато очень смеялся глупой, но забавной до невозможности пиэсе: «''Les bottes de mon père''». Затем выпив 2 стакана пуншу, получил охоту гулять и пошёл на бульвар. Там меня заинтересовал ''Антон'', гулявший около «Café de la Paix»: я стал следить за всеми его манёврами, и это было весьма любопытно. Наконец, вообразив что я совершенно от него обеспечен, ибо, по-видимому, он не узнавал меня, я без должных предосторожностей направился к дому, как вдруг Антон, сидевший на скамеечке с негром, узнал меня и пристал. Негр тоже клянчил, и ему было дано 1½ фр[анка] {{.~~..}}~~. Дома застал невероятный беспорядок вследствие того, что все твои вещи были кое-как сложены у меня. Все это я убрал и лёг спать в 3 часа. Встал в 8 в отвратительном состоянии духа. Однако ж, вымывшись и напившись чаю, пришёл в себя и писал. Завтракал где-то около оперы неважно. Так как нужно было к Тане везти кипу книг, то я сначала прошёлся, потом зашёл домой, взял книги и письма (в том числе прелестное от Наты) и поехал к Тане. Застал их в саду в самом приятном и весёлом настроении. Ничего нового. Сидел, болтал и гулял по саду. Домой вернулся только в 5-ом часу и работал до 7½ [часов]. Неблагодарное человечество!
