We found him sleeping peacefully. In front of us, she woke, swaddled and fed him. The day after his arrival he was very ill, and she was alarmed, thinking that he would die. A doctor was sent for. The next day he had improved, and now he has begun to suckle splendidly and sleep well. I saw him ''naked''. He is large, but ''awfully thin''. I place great hopes in his wonderful, sympathetic, healthy nurse, for the wonderful air and simple upbringing. We couldn't stay with him for even half an hour. We had to return quickly to ''Villeneuve'', and we accomplished this successfully. We arrived at ''[[Sens]]'' at 10 o'clock in the evening. The ''Hôtel de l'Ecu'' turned out to be an excellent hotel. We immediately sat down to dinner (we hadn't put anything in our mouths the whole day from 10.30), then we walked, and I went to bed at 11. I rose at 6 o'clock in the morning and went to inspect the ''cathedral'', which turned out to be one of the most ancient, most famous, and most magnificent Gothic cathedrals. Unfortunately, not having a ''guide'' at hand, I do not know its history. The building is enormous and heavenly. In one of the ''Chapelles'' a certain ''Dauphin'' is buried, judging by the inscription from the start of the 18th century; this means he was the son of Louis XIV. How he ended up there, I don't know. The windows had old coloured and, it seems to me, magnificently painted glass. At 7 o'clock I woke ''[[Lizaveta Mikhaylovna]]'', drank coffee, and left. The weather both yesterday and today is magnificent. The whole area we travelled through yesterday is a plain. The fields are magnificently cultivated; God knows I've never seen such vegetation at home. However, they say that the spring has been exceptionally favourable.
