A minor disappointment awaited me here upon my return, in the form of a document from the theatre office concerning my ''petition'' to be paid for 3 acts of "''[[Mazepa]]''" as if it were in 4 acts, in which I was notified that, according to an edict from the minister of court, "''His Excellency deigned to order that this petition be rejected''". I need to mention that the theatre officials here had me write a memorandum stating that although "''[[Mazepa]]''" was a three-act opera, it takes up the whole evening, and so I ought to be paid more for it. Be that as it may, with my natural tendency towards exaggerating everything, I was terribly offended, and wanted to take the opera back and cause a scandal, but they persuaded me to wait until the next day; and having slept, I became reconciled to this, but all the same I wrote a letter to ''[[Vsevolozhsky]]'' to protest against the ignorance shown to me. [[Yekaterina Laroche\|Katerina Ivanovna]] unexpectedly came to visit [[Laroche]] with her whole family, and if I'm not mistaken, [[Laroche]] was rather glad about this. ''He hasn't even been to the Conservatory yet'', and he just continues to sleep. Composers are confounding me. Today, ''Simon'' played his works all morning, and after the rehearsal until 6.30, ''[[Neitzel]]'' played through his opera. I was awfully tired, such that after having dined at a tavern and ~~going~~ for a stroll, I've come home, and I intend to go to bed soon. There was a soirée yesterday at [[Hřímalý]]{{'}}s, where I heard quartets by [[Glazunov]], [[Taneyev]] and [[Karl Davydov\|Davydov]]. I very much liked the latter. [[Mazepa]] is scheduled for the 27th, but I doubt it will happen. Don't come until I send you a dispatch. [[Tolya]] and [[Panya]] are at the Bashkin's ball today. I kiss you hard. Меня ожидало здесь по возвращении маленькое расстройство в виде бумаги из Конторы театров, в коей меня уведомляли, что по докладе г[осподину] Министру двора моего ''ходатайства'' об уплачивании за 3 акта «''Мазепы''» как бы за четыре «''Его сиятельство изволил приказать отклонить сие ходатайство''». Нужно тебе сказать, что здешние же чиновники театральные заставили меня написать докладную записку о том, что «''Мазепа''» хотя и трёхактная опера, но занимает весь вечер, а потому следует за неё платить больше. Как бы то ни было, но я, с свойственной мне манерой все преувеличивать, страшно разобиделся, хотел взять оперу назад и скандал учинить, но меня уговорили подождать до другого дня и я выспавшись смирился, но всё-таки написал письмо ''Всеволожскому'' с протестом против невежества, которое мне оказали. К Ларошу приехала неожиданно Кат[ерина] Ив[ановна] со всем семейством, и, если не ошибаюсь, Ларош скорее рад этому. ''Он ещё ни разу не был в Консерватории'' и продолжает спать. Одолели меня композиторы. Сегодня все утро ''Simon'' играл свои сочинения, а после репетиции до 6½/ ''Нейтцель'' играл свою оперу.
