Не знаю, где Вы теперь, в Москве или в Петербурге, разъедусь я с Вами или нет, — но на всякий случай пишу в Петербург, полагая, что к времени, когда моё письмо туда придёт, Вы уже вернётесь из Москвы.

Дело в том, что мне необходимо быть в Москве около 7 числа. 15-го там будет исполняться мой концерт для ф[орте]п[иано], а 22-го новая сюита; то и другое теперь спешно печатается, и мне хочется проделать корректуру того и другого, а для этого нужно время. А так как раньше чем послезавтра уехать отсюда не могу, то должен миновать Петербург и прямо проехать в Москву. Между тем помнится, что, уезжая, я говорил положительным образом, что в начале декабря буду в Петербурге и Кондратьев хотел к этому времени пригнать «''Орлеанскую деву''». Я ему уже написал, а теперь Вам пишу, что если в самом деле дадут «Деву», то не нужно стесняться моим присутствием. А если и совсем не найдётся времени для возобновления её, то я нимало не буду обижаться, ибо вполне достаточно того, что уж две другие мои оперы даются.

Я имею известие только о том, что Вы уехали в Москву. Это я знаю из газеты. Об том, как прошли «''Нижегородцы''», ещё не знаю. Надеюсь, что хорошо и что вы остались довольны. После праздников я буду в Петербурге. Очень нужно побеседовать с Вами насчёт перемен, которые хочу сделать в «''Вакуле''».
