	I think you will be very surprised to read at the head of this letter that I have ended up in [[Kharkov]]. This came about because, after living in [[Moscow]] for 5 days, before which I found myself in the midst of numerous, friends and relatives in [[Kamenka]], I was weary of ''people'', and wanted to spend at least one night alone in solitude, in an unfamiliar city. Moreover, I needed to ponder one question before going to [[Kamenka]], which would again require several hours of solitude. I think I wrote to you that I had written a [[Jurists' Song\|chorus]] for the Jurisprudence School jubilee. Now, with barely a month left until the jubilee, I am being asked to write something else for orchestra. On the one hand, writing these things is exceedingly tedious and unpleasant, but on the other, it is awkward to refuse. And so today my time has been spent noting down themes for a ''[[Jurisprudence March\|march]'', which I have decided to write and to orchestrate at [[Kamenka]]. 	In [[Moscow]], I attended the first Musical Society concert, which was not particularly successful. The programme was of dull and of little interest, and the performances equally so. Our kapellmeister, [[Erdmannsdörfer]] was not in the mood that evening. Then from the next morning until the evening I was amongst people, exhausted to the point of madness, and yearning for my carefree life in the country. As I have probably written to you on many occasions I am constantly being pestered by young composers seeking advice and direction. Most of these are young men who are deluded about the extent of their capabilities. But just this once I have come across a young man endowed with major creative talent. He is the son of your former neighbour, ''Catoire'', who is well known in [[Moscow]]'s commercial world. He is 24 years, and not yet too old. 			I called on [[Nikolay von Meck\|Kolya]] and [[Anna]], whose accommodation is most pleasant. [[Anna]] is already in [[Kamenka]]. I saw Aleksandr Filaretovich there.

			I heard [[Rimsky-Korsakov]]'s opera "''The Snow Maiden''" performed very well at a private theatre in [[Moscow]]. I am going to the opera here today.

Я думаю, Вы очень удивитесь, прочитавши на заголовке письма, что я попал в Харьков. Это произошло оттого, что я очень устал от ''людей'', прожив в Москве 6 дней, и что перед тем, как очутиться в Каменке среди других, близких, но всё же многих людей, мне хотелось хоть одни сутки провести в одиночестве, в незнакомом городе. К тому же, мне надо было обдумать до Каменки один вопрос, требующий нескольких часов опять-таки в одиночестве. Я, кажется, писал Вам, что мною написан ''хор'' для правоведского юбилея. Теперь, когда до юбилея остался всего с небольшим месяц, меня ещё просят написать что-нибудь для оркестра. С одной стороны, писать эти вещи чрезвычайно скучно и неприятно, с другой отказать неловко. И вот сегодня просидел над нотной бумагой несколько времени, темы для ''марша'', который я решил всё-таки написать и инструментовать в Каменке.

В Москве я присутствовал на первом концерте Муз[ыкального] общ[ества], который не особенно удался. Программа была мало интересная, серенькая, да и исполнение такое же. Наш капельмейстер Эрдмансдёрфер был в этот вечер не в духе. Затем от утра до позднего вечера я был среди людей, уставая до безумия и вздыхая о моем деревенском привольном житье. Как я уже, вероятно, писал Вам не раз, меня одолевают разные юные композиторы, желающие советов и указаний. По большей части это бывают заблуждающиеся насчёт размера своих способностей юноши. Но на сей раз я напал на молодого человека, одарённого крупным творческим талантом. Это сын известного в коммерческом мире Москвы бывшего соседа Вашего по дому, ''Катуара''. Ему 24 г[ода], и время ещё не ушло. Я уговорил его приняться серьёзно за учение, и он, кажется, едет в Берлин.

Навестил Колю и Анну, помещение которых мне очень нравится. Анна уже в Каменке. Видел у них Александра Филаретовича.

Слышал в Москве, в частном театре, оперу P[имского]-Корсакова «''Снегурочка''» в очень порядочном исполнении. Сегодня пойду в здешнюю оперу.

Застанет ли письмо это Вас в Belair? Во всяком случае, надеюсь, что оно дойдёт до Вас. Будьте здоровы, дорогой друг мой!
