	My heartfelt thanks to you for the details about Verinovsky's death. Although there is nothing in them that even slightly reconciles me with the thought that an agreeable young man has disappeared from the face of the earth, all the same I am glad that there was at least some external cause for suicide, i.e. failure in the examination. Otherwise it would simply impossible to become accustomed to the sad consciousness that he died from a lack of that sympathy which his gentle and kind nature needed, and did not find it where he looked. Every death of a young good person affects me strongly; even more so when the death is a suicide. I keep thinking that if I had stayed another week in [[Tiflis]], he would still be alive. I was very fond of him; he was aware of this, and it may well be that my sympathy and moral support would have kept him from the thought of taking his own life. 	От души благодарю Вас за подробности о смерти Вериновского. Хотя в них нет ничего хотя бы сколько-нибудь примиряющего с мыслью об исчезновении с лица земли молодого и симпатичного человека, —- но все же я рад, что хоть какой нибудь внешний повод к самоубийству был, т. е. провал на экзамене. Иначе просто невозможно было бы привыкнуть к грустному сознанию, что он погиб от недостатка сочувствия, в коем его мягкая и добрая натура нуждалась и которого не нашёл там, где искал. Всякая смерть молодого, хорошего человека действует на меня сильно; ещё более, когда смерть — самоубийство. Мне все кажется, что останься я ещё неделю в Тифлисе, он бы остался жив. 			I do not know how to thank you for your intention to dedicate "''Ruth''" to me. I appreciate this attention and this honour very, very much. Thank you, golubchik!

			For opera librettos (in operas performed on the Imperial stage) two censorships are required: 1) general and 2) theatrical, i.e. the censor of the Theatrical-Literary Committee. If your opera is to be given in [[Piter]] or [[Moscow]], it must be subject to both. In [[Tiflis]], however, the general censor is sufficient. Anyway, the persons in authority will explain this to you, for example, ''Rogge''. In any case, I do not think that there can be anything in "''Ruth''" that would be problematical for any sort of censorship. You praise "''[[Manfred]]''" too much. I am proud only of its first movement. The more it goes on, the worse it becomes, and the finale is extremely weak. I cannot tell you anything about [[Arensky]], and I do not even know where he is.

			Write to me, golubchik, what sort of autograph you want from me: is it a score, or will anything do? The whole thing, or will an extract suffice???

Для оперных либретто (в операх, исполняемых на Императорской сцене) требуются две цензуры: 1) общая и 2) театральная, т. е. цензура Театрально-литературного комитета. Если Ваша опера пойдёт в Питере или Москве, она должна подвергнуться и той, и другой. В Тифлисе же достаточно одной общей цензуры. А впрочем, Вам это объяснят люди власть имеющие, напр[имер] ''Рогге''. Во всяком случае, не думаю, что в «''Руфи''» могло случиться что-нибудь неудабопропускаемое какой бы то ни было цензурой. Вы слишком расхваливаете «''Манфреда''». Я горжусь в нем только одной первой частью. Чем дальше, тем хуже, а финал весьма слабоват. Про Аренского ничего сказать Вам не могу, и не знаю даже, где он находится.

Напишите мне, голубчик, какой автограф мой Вы хотите: партитуру или все равно что бы то ни было? Целую вещь или достаточно отрывка???
