Это письмо передаст Вам ''Е. Л. Катуар'', отправляющийся в Петербург для того, чтобы попытаться сделаться Вашим учеником. По-моему, Катуар ''очень'' талантлив и ему непременно следует пройти серьёзную школу. В прошлом году он, вследствие моего настояния, оставил прежние занятия и поехал в Берлин, где проживает его бывший учитель ''Клиндворт''. Последний отдал его в руки теоретика ''Тирша'', который Катуару не понравился, ибо охлаждал его рвение слишком сухим и небрежным отношением к нему. Кроме того, будучи очень привязан к России, он никак не мог освоиться с жизнью среди немцев. В Москве, по семейному положению, он заниматься не может. Поэтому я посоветовал ему обратиться к Вам с убедительнейшею просьбой оказать ему Ваше участие. Ему, по-моему, необходимо прежде всего пройти ''контрапункт''. Разумеется, было бы идеально-хорошо, если бы Вы сами соблаговолили учить его контрапункту. Но боюсь, что у Вас времени нет. В таком случае возьмите на себя, по крайней мере, труд руководить ''Петербургской'' судьбой Катуара. Не посоветуете ли Вы ему учиться у Иогансона? Если да, то рекомендуйте его Иогансону. Что касается форм, инструментовки, то было бы большим счастьем для Катуара, если бы Вы уделили ему хоть немножко времени. А лучше всего, разумеется, если бы и контрапункту могли Вы его сами учить. Не сердитесь, что я пытаюсь отнять у Вас часть Вашего свободного времени, — но дело в том, что я принимаю живое участие в Катуаре и желаю ему от души добра.

Apart from this, being very attached to Russia, he could not feel at home living among the Germans. He cannot study in [[Moscow]] because of his family circumstances. So I advised him to approach you with an earnest entreaty to take an interest in him. Above all, to my mind, he needs to study ''counterpoint''.
