Вы продолжаете баловать меня своими письмами, а я продолжаю быть хроническим должником Вашим в этом отношении. Тут, конечно, как водится, следовало бы подробно объяснить, как и почему долго не писал, — но, дабы не тратить времени на эти объяснения, скажу только, что, ей-Богу, нельзя было, что физической возможности нет писать письма при той безумно спешной и утомительной работе, которая теперь поглощает меня. Вы, впрочем, знаете, что к концу 1-ой недели я ''должен'' представить в петербургскую дирекцию вполне готовые печатные экземпляры «''Чародейки''», а у меня 4-е действие ещё не сделано, а то, что сделано и награвировано, требует корректуры, а затем ещё есть кое-какие другие тоже спеш-ные работы и т. д. и т. д. Да вот ещё теперь по делам в Москву ездил и потерял три дня... И вся-то моя жизнь вечнопроходит в том, что я спешу и напрягаюсь в работе. Отчего это так? Отчего другие работают только когда Бог на душу положит? Впрочем, не думайте, что я жалуюсь на свою горемычную судьбу. Отлично знаю, что мне-то уж не приходится жа-ловаться. Но факт тот, что я утомлён до крайности всем пережитым за последнее время и решительно не предвижу, когдаможно будет вздохнуть свободно. На 3-ей неделе я обещал (даи хочется мне) дирижировать на большом концерте, которыйдается Филармоническим петербургским обществом и будетсостоять исключительно их моих сочинений. Нужно приготовиться к этому, а потом и за инструментовку «''Чародейки''»... Однако не хотел объяснять, а целых две страницы употребил именно на разъяснение.

Представьте, Юлия Петровна, что вот уже скоро две недели, как в Москве не шли «''Черевички''», сделавшие три полных сбора по увеличенным ценам. Такова теперешняя дирекция, таково мудрое управление г. Майкова. Поставили новую оперу, истратили на неё деньги, публика оперой очень интересуется, и в самом разгаре сезона ''две недели'' её не дают, но зато дают «''Аиду''», «''Гугеноты''» и т. п. старье, не делающее сборов!!! Изумительно! Вчера я был в Москве, между прочим по случаю одной свадьбы, на которой необходимо было присутствовать, но успел всё-таки забежать в театр, где шла новая опера бар[она] ''Фитингофа «Тамара»''. Опера не бездарна, но могла бы иметь хороший успех, если б г. Май-ков не распорядился отдать главную роль протежируемой им певице ''Ухтомской'', которая невыносима.

Ипполита Вас[ильевича] не видел. Он уехал в Петербург.

Я перед Вами очень виноват: до сих пор ещё не распорядился чтобы Вам послали либретто «''Черевичек''». Ради Бога, простите. Сейчас написал Юргенсону, что ы выслали.

Мне не совсем нравится, что Вы увлекаетесь г. Мордовцевым. Это страшный шарлатан, бесцеремонный компилятор. своеобразно уснащающий чужие наблюдения или чужие исто-рические розыскания своими восклицаниями, т[ак] сказать, фиоритурами, отступлениями, всякими риторическими фигурами, — и выдающий все это за свое. Если Вы хотите иметь настоящее понятие об Италии, прочтите или книгу ''Ковалевского'' или, ещё лучше, ''Тэна''. Как буду в Москве, куплю и пришлю Вам эту превосходную книгу. Если читаете по-английски, то можно также прочесть Диккенса "''Pictures of Italy''".

Ларош особой статьи о «''Манфреде''» не писал, а лишь коснулся его в большой статье о прошлогоднем музыкальном сезоне, напечатанной в октябрьской книжке «''Русского вестника''». Его отзыв довольно сухой и холодный. Он не любит, когда я пишу так называемую ''программную'' музыку.

Когда выйдут портреты действующих лиц из «''Черевичек», я Вам их непременно пришлю.

Отчего Вы думаете, что ''навсегда'' обречены жить ''так и там, как и где'' теперь? Вот уж никогда нельзя быть уверенным в прочности положения вещей, в данный момент уста-новившегося. Все может перемениться, и сердце моё чует, чтомы ещё с Вами много раз будем видеться и беседовать в Москве. Я очень бы желал, чтобы Вы имели возможность пожить покамест где-нибудь по близости от ''Севастополя'' на Южном берегу. Думаете ли Вы, что это возможно в близком будущем? Это имело бы на Вас благодетельное влияние!

Я нисколько не претендую на [то], что до сих пор ещё не имею портрета Вас всех, ибо знаю, что Вам не до того покамест было. Но рад буду очень, когда получу Ваши изображения.
