	I'm already on my third day in [[Leipzig]]. So many things have happened that I cannot describe them all. I'll explain as much as possible, but in brief, because there isn't time. Today was my first rehearsal at the ''Gewandhaus''. I suffered so much beforehand yesterday evening, and the whole of the night, and so terribly in the morning, but everything worked out completely well. I have met an incredible number of people here. The most prominent of these are ''[[Brahms]]'' and ''[[Grieg]]''. [[Brahms]] is a pot-bellied boozer, with whom I did a fair amount of drinking yesterday at [[Brodsky]]'s. ''[[Grieg]]'' is an exceptionally ~~sympathetic~~ little man of my age. I'm immeasurably tired of the agent Friedrich, who follows me around like a shadow, and manages my wanderings abroad. I find myself continually and infinitely homesick, but fortunately there are two people very close to me here, i.e. [[Brodsky]] (with his dear wife and belle soeur) and [[Ziloti]]. I pour out my soul to them. [[Vera Ziloti\|Vera ''Ziloti'']] has changed a great deal and ''grown old'', but she is utterly happy. Their child is very sweet. From here I'm going to [[Berlin]], where I need to agree terms with the Directorate of the Philharmonic Society. Thence to ''[[Hamburg]]''. I still don't know anything for sure about ''Copenhagen''. I'm in [[Berlin]] on 8 February, their style. ''[[Leipzig]]'' is a large, beautiful city. The frost is bitter. Tell Genichke that the critic ''Kraus'' sends his best regards. I'm going to sleep. Lord, how I should like to be in [[Tiflis]] now. I'll write after the second concert. I kiss you hard. Сегодня была в ''Гевандгаузе'' первая моя репетиция. Я страдал перед нею со вчерашнего вечера, и всю ночь, и все утро ужасно" на обошлось все совершенно благополучно. Познакомился здесь с невероятной массой лиц. Из них выделяются ''Брамс и Григ''. Брамс толстопузый кутила, с которым я вчера порядочно пьянствовал у Бродского. ''Григ'' необычайно симпатичный человечик моих лет. Мне безмерно надоедает повсюду как тень преследующий меня агент Фридрих, который устраивает мои заграничные скитания. Тоска на меня беспрестанно находит безмерная, но к счастий, здесь два очень близких мне человека, т. е. Бродский (с милейшей женой и belle soeur) и Зилоти. С ними отвожу душу.
