I've been in Leipzig for a week. There have been pleasant moments, but far more tiresome ones, with melancholia and continual thoughts about how to escape. Sapelnikov is here with me. I didn't let him go back to Russia; I want him to make acquaintances in Leipzig and Berlin. He produces a sensation wherever he plays; his is a great talent. In Berlin I organised dinners for him at Wolff's and Bock's, at which he would present himself. Blüthner was delighted with him and wanted to organise a musical matinée for him in his hall, but Ziloti and others advised postponing this until next autumn. I often see the Brodskys, Ziloti and Grieg and his wife. Grieg is a most dear person. I've heard a lot of music, including Weber's posthumous opera "Die 3 Pintos". At the Gewandhaus quartet concert for new talent, I heard the Italian Ferruccio Busoni and his talent had me in raptures. I've seen Forberg. He's asking me to review everything of mine that he publishes. I asked if his Geschäftsfreund P. Jurgenson would object to this? He replied: not at all. I made a promise. Tomorrow I'm giving a dinner for some old and new friends at the Keila restaurant. In the evening I'm going to Berlin. I'm very tired.

------
Berlin<br/>4 February
The farewell dinner at Keila's was very pleasant and cheerful (Fritsche was there, M. Krause, Ziloti, three German admirers, Grieg, Brodsky, Brittner), but it was awfully expensive: 250 marks!!!

In general the money is flying away. Two days ago I came here with Sapelnikov. Yesterday was the first rehearsal. The musicians received us magnificently, played wonderfully, and they applauded loudly after each piece. Yesterday at 6 o'clock there was a dinner at Wolff's, very formal and drawn out. The dinner was organised at my request so that people could hear Sapelnikov. There were numerous critics and important musical bigwigs. Sapelnikov produced a furore. Bock's grand dinner is tonight. I'll be sitting beside Artôt!!!!

I've received your letter. I thoroughly understand all the reasons you set forth to demonstrate the soundness of your plan to step back from the ranks of prominence. But I say that this would be untimely. You shouldn't have to be grateful for the Lord Mayor's visit. What a tyrant he is!!! But I won't expand on this matter in general today; too much needs to be said and ascertained for this not to be a fruitless discussion of the subject.

I earnestly request you to make up your mind regarding Khludov: yes or no. If it's no, then I've instructed Aleksey to immediately set to work looking for a dacha for this summer.

Friedrich finally revealed his true self: something akin to a blackmailer, but with a dash of madness. Be that as it may, he makes my blood boil terribly. I lost my temper today and yelled at him. He backed down and left with his tail between his legs, but I'm not done with him just yet. There's the issue of money, but I just don't want to be generous to him.
------
5 February
Today I rid myself of Friedrich. Yesterday's shouting had a splendid effect, and it all ended very peaceably, but I have less than 500 marks in my wallet. I'm not in the least sorry, because I would have given more if only to never see this viper again. Wolff did me a great service. Thanks to him and the information he obtained I could tell Friedrich-Herauss that he made no Verlust whatsoever in Dresden, and that he came away with a thousand. A first-class blackguard and scoundrel.

Dinner at Bock's was terribly formal; everyone was in tailcoats and ball gowns, and I had to make do with a frock coat. There was nothing to be done. I was seated beside Artôt. She has grown terribly plump; she seemed glad to see me. We immediately became terribly friendly again, and I'm having dinner with her the day after tomorrow. It was very pleasant and cheerful. Generally in the evenings I find myself cheerful and content (probably due to the drink), but in the mornings, when I awaken, I experience such indescribable hypochondriasis. Sapelnikov is staying next door, and is a great comfort to me. He's a most sympathetic fellow.

You ask where I'll be staying in Prague: God knows. A room has been prepared for me somewhere. After all, dreadful festivities await me there. On your arrival (do come, for God's sake), find out immediately where Velebín Urbánek lives, and you'll find out where I am from him.

In the meantime, farewell, golubchik! Regards to everyone. I'm very tired. I've been making visits all day.
