Вчера в ужасную снежную бурю выехал из Парижа и только в 12 ч[асов] ночи (вместо 7) приехал в Лондон. Переезд через пролив был ужасен; все поголовно (кроме меня) были больны, и тазы с рвотной то и дело выносили и приносили. Концерт послезавтра, 22-го, а 23/11 я уезжаю в ''Тифлис'', да именно в Тифлис, куда меня ужасно зовут и куда мне ужасно хочется. Хотелось бы через Италию и потом морем, да денег мало. Славы я нажил в Париже очень много, но денег ни гроша. А как трудно мне было отделаться от Парижа! Множество народу собиралось эксплуатировать мой успех и требовали, чтобы я чуть не весь апрель и май оставался там и давал концерты—и все это ''даром''!!! Но моё утомление там дошло почти до сумасшествия, до потери памяти и соображения, и я решил удрать. Пиши мне теперь в ''Тифлис'', ибо вернее всего, что я поеду через Варшаву, Смоленск, Орёл, Харьков, Ростов прямо отсюда. Кланяйся всем. Получи деньги из обоих театров, да нельзя ли, чтобы ты и пенсию получил?<br />

Yesterday, in a terrible snowstorm, I left [[Paris]] and only arrived in [[London]] at 12 o'clock at night (instead of 7). The channel crossing was awful; everybody (besides me) was ill, and the sick-bowls were being continually being taken back and forth. The concert is the day after tomorrow, the 22nd, and on 23/11 I'm leaving for ''[[Tiflis]]'', yes [[Tiflis]] indeed, where they're terribly keen to have me, and where I terribly want to be. I should have liked to have gone through Italy and then by sea, but I have too little money. I've earned a great deal of fame in [[Paris]], but not a single penny. And how hard it was to escape from [[Paris]]! Many people were set on exploiting my success and they demanded that I remain there for almost the whole of April and May giving concerts — and all of this ''for free''!!! But my exhaustion there almost reached the point of madness, with loss of memory and comprehension, and I decided to take flight. Write to me now in ''[[Tiflis]]'' because I'll probably go directly from here via [[Warsaw]], [[Smolensk]], Oryol, [[Kharkov]], and Rostov. Regards to everyone. Take the money from both theatres, and could you also collect the pension? <br />
