Романсы я непременно напишу, но не торопи меня. Я опять начинаю соображать новое, большое сочинение, которое, с тех пор как я кончил клавираусцуг оперы, овладело всеми моими мыслями. Романсы будут написаны, наверное, в течение зимы.

О Мертене я хлопотал, сколько мог; был у Кавелина и говорил с Савицким. Кажется, он покамест остаётся на прежнем основании, а насчёт капельмейстерского места Кавелин сказал: «''Мы посмотрим''».

Относительно хлопот об «''Опричнике''» скажу тебе, что ни за что не буду писать к самодуру Никольскому; к прелестной Крутиковой готов писать хоть каждый день; прибавить к партии Басманова ничего не могу и решительно не вижу, где бы могло быть это эффектное прибавление. Когда ты найдёшь своевременным просить об этих переменах в распределении ролей, дай мне знать, и я немедленно напишу Направнику, помимо которого не сделаю ни шагу. В Петербурге я буду на рождестве, и мы с тобой поговорим обо всем. Я получил письмо от Бергера, который сообщает, что откроет свой новый театр моей оперой с Лавровской в роли Морозовой.

В заключение просьба. Подари мне один экземпляр 2-ручного «''Опричника''» и пошли его к отцу, который хочет подарить его одной бедной госпоже. Будь здоров.
