Deeply respected Adolf Osipovich!
Permit me to abuse your boundless kindness and to burden you with a singularly most sensitive delicate and matter. It concerns Dvořák, and I ought to have written directly to him, but I have no Czech and he does not understand Russian, and writing in German is very difficult for me. The point is this. The Imperial Musical Society in Moscow has the utmost desire for Dvořák to appear personally at one of its concerts next season especially devoted to Czech music. I asked him about it while I was in Prague, but the charming eccentric told me that he would only travel to Russia when he had learned Russian. Meanwhile the concertmaster Čech, who was present during our conversation, told me later that he would be very willing to come instead of Dvořák, and of course I could not answer him, for in Moscow the attraction is a personal appearance by Dvořák, who enjoys great fame amongst us, and not by him, Čech, who is completely unknown to us. Subsequently he has repeatedly asked and reminded me to arrange an invitation for him. When I told Chvála, Fibich and other Prague musicians about Čech's offer, they all expressed strong opposition to Čech (whom they all dislike) being the representative for Czech music in Moscow, and advised me to bear in mind Bendl , who in his turn expressed his full readiness to to visit Moscow in the next season.

The other day this whole matter was considered at a meeting of the directors of the Imperial Russian Musical Society (of which I am a member). The directors, in order to elevate the importance and attractiveness of our concerts, wish in the next season to invite a famous musical artist to each of its concerts in the forthcoming season. So, for example, one of our concerts will be conducted by Gounod, another by Anton Rubinstein, etc. Dvořák, being very famous, would bring our concerts a great deal of authority and importance, and the directors specifically want him to appear on our stage. We know nothing whatsoever about Bendl, and his name would not lure in the Moscow public.

After considering all this, we came to the following decision. We must convince Dvořák to agree to come to Moscow, if only to conduct one of his items, even if he does not want to take on the whole concert. I have been specifically instructed to urge Dvořák to agree—and I want to ask you, kindly Adolf Osipovich, to take the trouble to discuss it thoroughly with him. We offer the following:

1) It would most preferable if Dvořák himelf were to conduct an entire concert of Czech compositions.

2) Since I am almost certain that he will not agree to this, because he is generally reluctant to conduct items which are not his own, then we ask him to come together with Bendl, who will conduct the remaining numbers on the programme. If he does not agree to this, then please take the trouble to ask him not to say anything about your conversation. The point is that it would be very unpleasant if we were to offend the most kindly and sympathetic Bendl. And indeed, Čech should also know nothing about the contents of this letter.

Now let us suppose that Dvořák agrees to come with Bendl to participate in a concert dedicated to Czech music. In this event you will delicately need to learn from Dvořák, 1) what sort of fee he wishes to receive for his journey to Moscow, and 2) which month he would prefer to come (between 1 November 1889 and 1 April 1890).

I do not know, dear Adolf Osipovich, whether I have explained the matter sufficiently clearly. I have said a lot, yet not too explicitly. Ultimately all my chatter boils down to the following: neither concertmaster Čech nor even Bendl can be invited by the directors of the Russian Musical Society in the capacity of sole representatives of Czech music.

Dvořák will not come alone, and therefore our only remaining hope is that Dvořák will agree to come together with Bendl. Then matters will turn out splendidly, i.e. we will have a good concertmaster to perform works by Smetana and other Czechs, and the famous Dvořák, a name which will increase the allure and attraction of our concert advertisements. How desirable it would be for this to happen!

I ask you, deeply respected Adolf Osipovich, not to be angry with me for involving you in my troubles. The reply to this endless letter of mine should be addressed not to me here, as in a few days I am leaving for abroad, but rather to the following address: Berlin, W. am Carlsbad, Concert Direction Hermann Wolff, for delivery to P. I. T.

Kindly convey my cordial greetings to your wife , to father deacon N. P. Apraksin , and to L. N. Sreznevskaya with her mother .

Your sincerely devoted and affectionate,
