Оба письма Ваши я только что получил, возвратившись в Москву из поездки.

''Трио моё не имеет никакой программы''. Будучи написано по случаю смерти по случаю смерти Н[иколая] Гр[игорьевича] Р[убинштейна] оно носит скорбный характер, — но этим его программность и ограничивается. Если б я имел в виду объяснять значение каждой отдельной части для слушателя то сделал бы это при издании ''трио''. Итак желание Ваше исполнить не могу, — но предлагаю Вам в афише выставить посвящение и притом так как оно у меня написано, т.е. не Н[иколаю] Гр[игорьевичу] Р[убинштейну] а «''памяти великого артиста''».

Весьма радуюсь, что Вы будете играть трио и уверен, что исполнение его будет превосходно.

Кланяйтесь милой жене Вашей и Клиндворту с женой. Скажите ему, что согласно обещанию, во время его пребывания в Москве я буду все время здесь.

I have just received both of your letters <ref name="note1"/>, upon returning to [[Moscow]] from my travels.

''My [[Piano Trio|trio]] has no programme whatsoever''. Being written on the occasion of the death of [[Nikolay Rubinstein|Nikolay Grigoryevich Rubinstein]] it bears a mournful character, but this does not go so far as to be programmatic. Had I intended to explain the significance of each movement for the listener, then I should have done so at the time of publication of the ''[[Piano Trio|trio]]''. Therefore I cannot fulfil your desire, — but I would suggest that you include the dedication on your poster, and moreover, just as I wrote it, i.e. not to [[Nikolay Rubinstein|Nikolay Grigoryevich Rubinstein]], but rather "''To the memory of a great artist''".

I am very happy that you will be playing the [[Piano Trio|trio]], and am sure that it will be excellently performed.

My regards to your dear wife and to [[Klindworth]]'s wife. Tell him that, in accordance with my promise, I shall be staying the whole time here in [[Moscow]].
