Je viens te demander un grand service. Il faut que tout de suite tu ailles trouver {{und2|S[aint]-Saëns}} et lui dire, s'il est à Paris, ou bien lui écrire s'il est ailleurs, que la Direction de la Société Impériale Musicale Russe te charge de lui faire la proposition suivante. Nous (c'est à dire la Direction) voudrions consacrer un de nos 12 concerts symphoniques à la musique française; ce concert aura lieu le {{und2|4 Avril 1890}}. S[aint]-Saëns voudrait-il nous faire l'insigne honneur de venir a Moscou pour le conduire? Malheureusement nous ne pouvons lui offrir une grosse somme et c'est ''mille roubles'' (environ 2600 francs) que nous lui offrons. De grâce fais cela aussi vite que possible et fais moi savoir le résultat, de tes démarches.

Adresse ta lettre à Moscou, Conservatoire Impérial de Musique.

Comment vas tu? Pourquoi ne m'écris-lu pas? Qu'ai-je fait pour te {{sic|deplaire|déplaire}}? Moi je ne t'ai pas écrit {{sic|parceque|parce}} que depuis bien longtemps je n'ai pas un moment à moi. Mille choses pour M[ada]me Mackar; je Vous souhaite à tous les deux tout espèce de prospérité pour 1890.

I approach you to ask a great service. You must without delay seek out {{und2|[[Saint-Saëns]]}} and tell him, if he is in [[Paris]], or even write to him if he is elsewhere, that the Directorate of the Imperial Russian Musical Society have asked you to make the following proposition. We (that is to say, the Directorate) should like to devote one of our 12 symphonic concerts to French music; this concert will take place on {{und2|4 April 1890}}. Would [[Saint-Saëns]] do us the most esteemed honour of coming to [[Moscow]] to conduct it? Unfortunately we are unable to offer a large sum, and we are offering him ''a thousand rubles'' (approximately 2600 francs). Thank you for doing this as quickly as possible, and do let me know the outcome of your actions <ref name="note1"/>.
