Я, а не Вы, виноват в том, что нам не пришлось свидеться в день моего выезда; ибо я должен был предупредить Вас, что поезд отправляется часом раньше. А мне очень нужно было с Вами повидаться. Я хотел у Вас попросить позволения в концерте (14 янв[аря], общедоступном) вместо предположенных двух новинок сыграть «''Poème lyrique''». Программа так складывается, что мне это будет легче и приятнее. Я хочу, как это было в Москве, сыграть Вашу чудную вещицу и скерцо Лядова.

Простите, что я напрасно заставил Вас потратить время на выставление смычковых знаков в «''Новинках''». Впрочем, обо всем этом я ещё поговорю с Вами вскоре устно, ибо перед ''Новым годом'' снова буду в П[етер]бурге. Принимаю живейшее участие в постигшем Вас семейном горе.

I, rather than you, are to blame for the fact that we were unable to see each other on the day of my departure, because I ought to have warned you that the train was leaving an hour earlier <ref name="note1"/>. And I very much needed to see you. I wanted to ask your permission to play «''Poème lyrique''» in the popular concert (14 January), instead of the two novelties <ref name="note2"/>. The programme has developed in such a way that this will be easier and more pleasant for me. I want to play your wonderful things and [[Lyadov]]'s scherzo, just as in [[Moscow]].

Forgive me for unnecessarily forcing you to spend time inserting bowing marks in the "''Novelties''". Anyway, I'll speak to you about all this in person soon, because before the ''New Year'' I'll be in [[Petersburg]] again. I am sharing most vividly in the family grief that has befallen you <ref name="note3"/>.
