Получил, милый друг, твоё письмо. По поводу сюиты я указал на ''Зилоти'' в том смысле, что он лучше меня может указать, что именно должно войти в ''сюиту''. ''Менять не нужно ни одной ноты''. Ведь балет та же симфония! Вальс, само собой разумеется, войдёт, но есть много других вещей, годных для концертного исполнения. И вот их-то ''Зилоти'' должен указать. Он имеет к моей музыке вообще большую симпатию, но при этом он не ''автор'', а последние всегда ошибаются в оценке своих вещей. Я думаю, что вторая картина 2-го действия (сон) должна вся войти. Впрочем, пусть решит Зилоти. Во всяком случае, ''одной'' сюитой трудно удовольствоваться, ибо не то чтобы все было удивительно хорошо, — но весь балет выдержан на одном уровне достоинства.

Оперу я через 3 дня кончу. Буду теперь делать клавираусцуг, ибо он прежде всего нужен для певцов и для хора. Спрашивается, посылать ли мне клавираусцуг в театр, где его с нетерпением ждут и снимут несколько копий, или же по действиям посылать прямо к тебе, с тем, чтобы ''немедленно стали гравировать''? Отвечай мне на этот вопрос, имея в виду не только твои удобства, но также и театра, которым следует дорожить всячески. Вероятно, дня через 4 или 5 я уеду в ''Рим'' или куда-нибудь в другое место. Клавираусцуг буду высылать по действиям. Научи меня, как посылать? ''Бандеролью'' или ''посылкой''? С нетерпением буду ожидать твоего ответа. ''Адрес'' из того места, куда я уеду, сообщу тебе телеграммой. ''Ратер'' чудак! И, наверно, до смерти стоскуется по России. А про Беляева я и без того знал, что он хоть и действительно много для музыки жертвовал, но ни копейки не даст лишней против своего бюджета. Обнимаю. Всем твоим шлю поклоны!

I've received your letter, dear friend <ref name="note1"/>. Regarding the suite <ref name="note2"/>, I referred to ''[[Ziloti]]'' in the sense that he can indicate better than I what should go into the ''suite''. ''Not a single note needs to be altered''. After all, a ballet is like a symphony! It goes without saying that the waltz is to be included, but there are many other items suitable for concert performance. This is what ''[[Ziloti]]'' ought to indicate. In general he has a great sympathy for my music, but at the same time he is not the ''author'', and the latter is always mistaken in evaluating their own things. I think that the second scene of the 2nd act (the sun) should all go in. However, let [[Ziloti]] decide. In any case, ''one'' suite may be insufficient, because while not everything was astonishingly good, the whole ballet is sustained at the same level of quality.

I'm 3 days from finishing the opera. Then I'll be making the piano reduction, because it's required above all else for the singers and for the chorus. Ought I to send the reduction to the theatre, where it's impatiently awaited so they can make several copies, or do I send each act directly to you, for ''immediate engraving''. Answer me this question, taking into account not only your convenience, but also that of the theatre, who must be given every consideration. In 4 or 5 days I shall probably go to ''[[Rome]]'', or some-such place. I'll be sending the reduction one act at a time. How do I send it? By ''package'' or ''parcel post''? I'll be eagerly awaiting your reply. I'll notify you by telegram of my ''address'' wherever I go. ''[[Rahter]]'' is an eccentric!<ref name="note3"/> Surely he'll be mourning for Russia until his dying day. And as for [[Belyayev]], I'm not unaware that although he has indeed made many sacrifices for the sake of music, he wouldn't give a single kopek more than his budget <ref name="note4"/>.
