Я написал Модесту, чтобы в начале марта он попросил Осипа Ивановича получить мою пенсию за январь и февраль и, взяв оную от твоего брата, отправить её ко мне, ибо я начинаю сильно нуждаться в деньгах. Оказалось, что Осипу Ивановичу нужна новая доверенность, притом засвидетельствованная флорентинеким консулом. Но я ни за какие блага в мире не пойду к здешнему консулу, — ибо вся здешняя русская колония точит на меня зубы, да и вообще я не умею и не люблю таскаться в консульские канцелярии. Итак, новую доверенность я дам Осипу Ивановичу в мае, когда буду в Петербурге. Модестин воспитанник ''Конради'' прислал мне вперёд 500 р[ублей], полагая, что я доверенность сейчас же пришлю и что он сейчас же деньги от Осипа Ивановича получит. Но так как я доверенности не пошлю, то принуждён опять просить твоего кредита и переслать Осипу Ивановичу 500 р[ублей], дабы он вручил их ''Модесту'', который в свою очередь передаст их Конради. Пенсию за ''март и апрель'' я также непременно должен здесь получить, ибо иначе не на что будет приехать в Россию, и в своё время я попрошу тебя их выслать. Я бы хотел, чтобы доверенность на получение пенсии была у тебя, а не у Осипа Ивановича. При всем моем уважении к последнему, будучи невероятно злопамятен, я ему не простил и никогда не прощу бесцеремонность и почти грубость, с которой он отнёсся нынче летом к моей денежной просьбе. Всякие денежные дела с ним мне теперь в высшей степени тягостны, и быть ему благодарным за его хлопоты о получении моих денег мне очень тяжело. Нельзя ли устроить, чтобы доверенность была у тебя?

Оперу ''я кончил''. Завтра начну переложение, а послезавтра, вероятно, уеду в Рим и дам тебе новый адрес по телеграфу.

Странно, что никто мне не даёт знать, получен ли в дирекции мой отказ от директорства?
