Mon cher ami!

An revoir!

My dear friend!
Your letter made me very happy; I had thought you were a little angry with me because I've been silent for so long. But I haven't been writing to anyone for quite some time, and for good reason! Just imagine: in 6 weeks I've written a large opera (which certainly I still have to orchestrate)! It had to be finished by the spring at all costs, so that there would be time for it to be engraved, to distribute the artists before they leave for the holidays, to let the chorus to start studying it, etc. etc. This opera will be staged at the opening of the next season, it has the great interest of the Director of the Imperial Theatres, and its subject has been endorsed by the Emperor! You can imagine the amount of effort required to complete this terrible task. I'm also very tired, and perhaps this tiredness is the cause of an indisposition over the last few days of which I cannot shake off. At the moment I'm working on the score for voice and piano.

I thank you, my dear friend, for what you did for Madame Klimentova. She is a talented artist, but I very much doubt that she will achieve the successes she was counting on in Paris. She was very ill two years ago, after which her voice lost a great deal. You are very much mistaken, my dear friend, in believing that it was by calculation that I arranged Colonne's invitation to Moscow. We needed someone who could replace Massenet, who deceived us disgracefully, and as Colonne's name is well known, thanks to his concerts, it was in the Russian Musical Society's interests for him to come. I would like him to play more of my compositions, but I will not offer inducements to him, nor to anyone else.

I am very happy that my ballet pleases Madame Mackar! Say some nice things to her from me!

My friend, I feel very unwell and so cannot write for long. I shall be picking up my pen soon to give you news.

Until we meet! Thank you again for your letter and for your friendship, which you can be sure that I reciprocate.

Yours ever,
