			Your letter made me awfully glad. They assured me that there would be no opera in [[Tiflis]] next season, and I almost wept with grief when I heard about this. Now I see that not only will there be opera, but that I shall be present for the production of "''Azrra''". This made me incredibly glad, because this circumstance doubles the interest and enjoyment of my stay in [[Tiflis]]. Only it is in October, for God's sake!

			I have, finally, received a reply from ''[[Pchelnikov]]''. The rumour about ''[[Altani]]'s'' resignation is false, and was started, so he writes, by [[Altani]]'s ''enemies''. I do not know who these enemies are: however, I suspect that ''[[Korsov]]'' is behind it. You may be sad to learn this information, but I am glad for you now that the circumstances have been clarified. I was worried that you may be disappointed by that letter, because I believed the rumour, and thought that if the matter was decided, then why predict difficulties for you? Now I'll say frankly that, despite all the good aspect of being a kapellmeister in the capital, I thought with sorrow about the awful conditions you would have to put up with! You cannot even imagine how much suffering and grief you would have had to endure. A much more suitable position for you would be a professorship in [[Moscow]], which [[Taneyev]] dreams of. But [[Safonov]], apparently, has made no offer whatsoever? Write to me yes or no. But we shall talk a great deal about all this in [[Tiflis]]. It is difficult to express how much my soul longs for [[Tiflis]]! Even I find it strange why I am so exceptionally fond I am of this city.

Письмо твоё меня ужасно обрадовало. Меня уверяли, что в Тифлисе оперы в будущем сезоне не будет, и я чуть не плакал от огорчения по этому поводу. Теперь вижу, что не только опера будет, но что я буду присутствовать на постановке «''Азры''». Это меня невероятно обрадовало, ибо обстоятельство это удваивает интерес и удовольствие моего пребывания в Тифлисе. Только, ради Бога, в октябре!

От ''Пчельников'' а ответ, наконец, получил. Слух об отставке ''Альтани'' ложный и пущен, как он пишет, ''врагами'' Альтани. Кто эти враги, не знаю, — но, впрочем, подозреваю, что ''Корсов''. Тебе будет, может быть, печально узнать это сообщение, а я теперь, когда обстоятельства разъяснились, за тебя рад. В том письме я боялся разочаровать себя, ибо доверял слуху и думал, что если дело решённое, то зачем предсказывать тебе неприятности? Теперь же скажу прямо, что, несмотря на все хорошие стороны капельмейстерства в столице, я с грустью думал, при каких ужасных условиях тебе придётся действовать! Сколько бы тебе пришлось страдать и выносить огорчений — ты и представить себе не можешь. Гораздо более подходящее для тебя положение было бы профессорство в Москве, о чем мечтал Танеев. Но Сафонов, по-видимому, не делал никаких предложений? Напиши мне, да или нет. Но обо всем этом мы будем помногу беседовать в Тифлисе. Трудно выразить, до чего я душой стремлюсь в Тифлис! Даже мне самому странно, на чем основана моя какая-то исключительная любовь к сему городу.

Относительно «''Сна на Волге''» я не совсем с тобой согласен. Многое в нем мне очень нравится, особенно стало нравиться теперь, когда я ближе познакомился с оперой, проигравши её два раза.

Заехать к вам в деревню едва ли придётся, ибо я мечтаю ехать через Волгу и Баку. Впрочем, увидим. О том, что нужно для постановки «''Азры''» в Петербурге, тоже переговорим устно. Нужно очень многое и вместе очень малое: ''протекция'' при первом шаге. Вопрос в том, откуда её достать. Печатные клавираусцуги не необходимы. Обнимаю тебя. У ''Ломачки'' целую ручку. ''Анне Михайловне'' поклон.
