My good and dear friend!
Not only did I did not think for a moment of being cross with you, but, on the contrary, I was blaming myself for not having written to you in so long in order to congratulate you and in particular to thank you for the enormous service that you have rendered us. In Moscow you had the most brilliant success ever achieved there, and this magnificently crowned the season, which had somewhat compromised by the concerts preceding your own. Poor Dvořák in particular made an unfortunate impression. Nápravník (from the Saint Petersburg Opera) is a first rate conductor, but he had had the unfortunate notion of compiling a programme solely from his own compositions, which are little appreciated here; eventually there were disgruntled mutterings — until you came and triumphed in every way most decisively and brilliantly. And so both the Muscovite public and the Directorate are hoping that you will return. You chose your programme masterfully, and I have been told how your initial success at your grand debut always grew as you went on, until your wonderful and final veritable triumph. Regarding your qualities as a conductor — I anticipated that they would stir these outbursts of enthusiasm.

Ultimately I was enormously delighted, but what I feel what is doubly satisfying is that you shall retain good memories both of my beloved town of Moscow and of its inhabitants. What a pity that I could not do the honours in Moscow. But due to various fatigues and emotions my health had been quite severely compromised, and I had to recover in remote isolation. I took advantage of this isolation, because I produced the score of a grand opera for Saint Petersburg next season.

A thousand good wishes and respectful greetings to Madame Colonne and a thousand compliments to my little friend, who shall soon be my big friend.

I embrace you, my dear friend, and I am your devoted,
P. Tschaikovsky
I'm addressing this letter to Aix-les-Bains, in the hope that it will reach you.
