	This morning, or perhaps even yesterday, the first two pieces were posted to you <ref name="note1"/>. It was not without some trepidation that I sent them to you: I am afraid that you will find them too long and of poor quality. I ask you to tell me your opinion frankly, so that I can bear your comments in mind when composing the next pieces. I should ask you to send the fee for these pieces by ''20 January''. Next Saturday I am leaving for a month abroad for family matters, and on my return shall be in need of money. If you find the second piece to be inadequate, then write to me about this either before my departure, or in ''[[Geneva]]'' at the following address: ''Boulevard du Plaim-Palais, № 23'', M[ada]me Davidof pour remettre etc. If you would like me to rewrite "Carnival" then, please, do not stand on ceremony, and rest assured that by the appointed date, i.e. by 15th January, I shall write you another. You are paying me such a terribly high price that you have every right to demand all manner of changes, additions, cuts and rewritings. Сегодня утром, а может быть, и вчера ещё, Вам высланы по почте две первые пиэсы. Я не без некоторого страха препроводил их к Вам: боюсь, что Вам покажется длинно и скверно. Прошу Вас откровенно высказать Ваше мнение, чтобы я мог иметь в виду Ваши замечания при сочинении следующих пиэс. Гонорарий за эти пиэсы я попросил бы Вас выслать к ''20 январю''. В будущую субботу я уезжаю на один месяц за границу по семейным делам и по возвращении буду нуждаться в деньгах. Если Вам вторая пиэса покажется негодной, то напишите мне об этом или теперь же, до моего отъезда, или в ''Женеву'' по следующему адресу: ''Boulevard du Plaim-Palais, № 23'', M[ada]me Davidof pour remettre и т. д. Если Вы пожелаете пересочинения «Масленицы», то, пожалуйста, не церемоньтесь и будьте уверены, что к сроку, т. е. к 15-му января, я Вам напишу другую.
