Прости, что так долго не писал тебе. Ни в Петербурге, ни в Киеве я решительно не имел возможности вести мою корреспонденцию. Наконец, после почти двухмесячной возни с постановкой «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Пиковой дамы&amp;#039;&amp;#039;», Я имею возможность отдохнуть. Но зато «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Пиковая дама&amp;#039;&amp;#039;» до того мне надоела (каковое обстоятельство не мешает мне быть очень довольным ею), что ты уволь меня от рассказа о том, как её ставили в обоих городах и как я волновался, боялся, огорчался, радовался, страдали наслаждался. В общем скажу только, что и невиданно рос-кошная постановка на столичной сцене, и скромная, но изящная провинциальная меня вполне удовлетворили и что всеми исполнителями я безусловно доволен. Однако же поразительнее и совершеннее всего 1) &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Фигнер&amp;#039;&amp;#039; и 2) &amp;#039;&amp;#039;петербургский оркестр&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, который сделал истинные чудеса. Ну, довольно об этой милой, но очень утомившей меня &amp;#039;&amp;#039;даме&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;

Часто видался я с театральными тузами в Петербурге и пробовал закинуть удочки насчёт постановки «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Азры&amp;#039;&amp;#039;». Более обстоятельно и серьёзно я заведу об этом разговор в январе. Но прямо скажу тебе, что на {{und|будущии год}} мало надежды. Предполагается «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Млада&amp;#039;&amp;#039;», а мне заказывается одноактная опера и двухактный балет. Всеволожский все больше и больше благоволит ко мне и решительно не допускает мысль об сезоне без нового моего произведения. Таким образом, я становлюсь невольно помехой для молодых авторов, стремящихся к принятию их опер на казённую сцену. Это меня мучает и беспокоит, — но соблазн слишком велик, и я ещё недостаточно уверен, что пора замолчать и очистить место для молодого поколения. Как бы то ни было, но в январе, когда я поеду в Петербург для подробной беседы с &amp;#039;&amp;#039;тузами&amp;#039;&amp;#039; о моих двух будущих произведениях (они должны вместе составить один спектакль), то вместе с Направником попытаюсь серьёзно вытащить «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Азру&amp;#039;&amp;#039;» на столичную сцену. Так как в то же время я должен и по внутреннему побуждению, и по просьбе &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Аренского&amp;#039;&amp;#039; поддержи-вать всячески ходатайство &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Кондратьева&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, старающегося убедить директора поставить в Петербурге «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Сон на Волге&amp;#039;&amp;#039;», — то предваряю, что затруднений будет масса. Все это я пишу, чтобы ты не думал, что я не помнил о тебе. Никто лучше меня по опыту не знает, как важно и как нужно для молодого оперного автора, чтобы произведения его ставились набольших сценах, и потому я готов даже на жертвы, чтобы оперы таких людей, как &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Аренский&amp;#039;&amp;#039; и т ы, были приняты, — но я не уверен, что жертвой своей я достигну цели. Ну, положим, я откажусь от заказанных мне оперы и балета. Что из этого воспоследует? То, что, быть может, скорее поставят 3 иностранных оперы, чем одну русскую молодого автора. Нельзя ли, чтобы &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Амфитеатров&amp;#039;&amp;#039; написал в столичной &amp;#039;&amp;#039;газете&amp;#039;&amp;#039; статью об «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Азре&amp;#039;&amp;#039;». Особенно хорошо было бы, если бы статья появилась в «&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Новом времени&amp;#039;&amp;#039;». На эти три дня уже назначены дебютанты и дебютантки. В Киеве часто говорил о тебе с артистами, особенно с Пузановым.
